fuel lines on '99 Cougar

I am in the process of replacing the fuel pump in a '99 Cougar.I have the tank down but, can not get the two plastic fuel lines loose from the sender assembly.There is one white and one red.They both have plastic collars that you squeeze to release the line but,the line will not come off.Any tricks to these with out breaking them?
