Question 96 lumina security light always on & intermittent no start

My 96 Lumina has a security light that Has recently decided that it wanted to annoy me by staying. Along with the stupid light being on, The car decides when it wants to sart and when it don't. The battery is less than a month old and a friend of my suggested tapping on the started when someone else is trying to start it. I did just that and it didn't help at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 96 lumina security light always on & intermittent no start

The 1995-2001 Lumina/Monte Carlo vehicles use a VATS - Vehicle Anti Theft System. This is composed of a kill switch for the fuel pump/ignition systems and a resistor pellet in your key. Chances are your VATS reader in the ignition cylinder on your steering column has decided to play a game with you. Either have it cleaned or get a dealer to have it recored and coded for you. Of course, this isn't for-sure, but its the closest I can get you to it.
