Question Speakers: Stock --> High End

Hey folks, I'm sure this has been answered before, but all my searches on the forum were for naught.

I'm looking to replace my stock speakers in a 97 Del Sol Vtec. I am, understandably, interested in Infinity Kappas. I've spoken to the people at crutchfield.com (They're too expensive to buy from, but they know a lot of stuff) and they said that only the -component- 6.5 Kappas are the right size to drop in and still use the stock grill. They state that the non-components stick out too far to use the stock grill and that the grill that comes with the speakers won't adequately cover up the hole left by the removal of the stock one.

However, they have a vested interest in telling me that only the most expensive stuff will fit my car.

Despite this, cardomain's website says that the noncomponent 6.5 kappas are a straight drop-in for the stocks.

What I'm wondering is this:

Has anyone out there put 2 or 3-way non-component 6.5 Kappas in their Del Sol successfully? If so, can I fit these in both the pillar and the door? How much modification to the housing has to be done? I'd rather get a final unbiased word on the kappas before I go out and spend that kind of money.

Also, could I possibly use the grills that came with the kappas and expect them to be large enough to cover the holes left by removing the stock grills?

Is it even possible to fit 6X9's in the rear pillars with enough drilling, sawing, and sanding?

I'm basically interested in knowing what Kappas (or other high end speakers) will fit into my car and still look aesthetically pleasing. Widening holes or adding dynamat is within my capabilities. I'd prefer to use the stock grills (I like big sound and performance in an understated package), but if it takes the included speaker grills to cover the hole and make things look nice, I'm still perfectly happy.

What high-ends do you folks suggest in lieu of kappas that you KNOW fit into a Del sol?

The more information you can post, the better, feel free to be verbose as hell.

Thanks

Just installed new speakers in my 94 VTEC... I bought some CDT Audio component speakers to put in... at first it looked like I could use the stock brackets and grills... but the speakers were a bit too big.
I cut out a custom bracket from 1/4" MDF, and an 1/8" MDF half moon spacer to angle the speakers toward the rear of the car slightly, mounted them, and screwed the speakers into that...
The same could be done with infinitys, I would assume.
Speaking from personal experience, and as a semi-amature high end stereo installer, I highly recommend using a component set... you get MUCH better sound from them than from 2 way or 3 way coaxials.
I also HIGHLY recommend CDT Audio speakers... I consider them to be the best speakers and speaker systems in the world!

Re: Speakers: Stock --> High End

yeah, the infinity's are too deep for the del sol. The max depth you can go for a del sol front and rear is 2". I know crutchfield says 1 7/8", but i put JBL GTO series in my car (@" depth) and they fit fine. I did have to do a little work with the front but no major problems. I think Infinity makes a shallow depth series which aren't nearly as deep as the ones you are looking at. check those out.

Dunno if it'll help any, but I installed Infinity Reference speakers in the front of my Del Sol. I had to cut the plastic "basket" center out to allow for the speaker depth, but haven't had any issues otherwise. I even still use the factory grilles.

Here's what I have in the front:

Re: Speakers: Stock --> High End

crutchfield always has something to say about how only the more expensive speakers will work..hints that they get paid on commision..so dont trust them in that aspect...as far as if they will fit or not i couldnt tell you..but i would assume not considering i know other larger speakers like the kenwood 4 ways dont kit... but I agree with Killa on the fact that componant sounds far better ..I have opted to go with Polk Momo componants all around as soon as my funds come up and i stop drinking so much...so um i guess that will never be happening
