99 Sebring Wont Start!! PLEASE HELP!!!

Hey there, I am in need of some serious help. My girlfriend has a 1999 Sebring LXi. She went into the store and ended up stranded. I went to try and help her but can't figure out what is wrong with it. When you turn the key the engine turns over, battery is fine, starter is fine. It is acting like it is not getting any spark or any fuel. I took it to my mechanic and he thought for sure that it was the distributor. I went ahead and replaced the distributor and it is still doint the same thing. Has anybody else had this problem. I need some help please. Her car cannot sit where it is at for much longer and I dont want to have to pay to get it towed all over town. Any help would be great. Thanks so much. Josh

It may be the key. Check the first page of the manual. The car may no longer be recognizing the programming on the key and it automatically disables the car. THis happenned to me 3 times(and one tow fee) before I checked the book. I had a new key cut and programmed (around $50) and haven't had a problem since.

Good Luck!

Unhappy Hopefully not..........but it could be

I experienced a very similar problem.............it was my fuel pump. Even though my dealer was convinced that couldn't be the problem.
The tow truck driver got under the car before he hooked me up and hit the pump (on top of the gas tank) and she started right up.
He said his convertible BMW did the same thing.....seems a lot of verts have smaller tanks due to the top storage.
To make a long story short..........the dealer wouldn't help me at first since i drove it in......he said they couldn't diagnose it even though I told them the tow truck story................well, it wouldn't start the next day, you would not believe the scene at the dealer, hehehe thats another story................Thank goodness for a ext warranty. The car has been perfect since then, LOL, but the warranty is almost up

Cool Re: 99 Sebring Wont Start!! PLEASE HELP!!!

I have a 98 Sebring convert. Same problem, I had done tune-up , changed distributor and rotor, but still stalled. thought it was fuel pump, mechanic changed fuel pump relay(like a fuse in fuse box) still stalled, took it back to him, actually coasted into his station, he did all kinds of tests, and figured out it is crank sensor. I ave to go pick it up today, $350 to figure it out.

Re: 99 Sebring Wont Start!! PLEASE HELP!!!

Did you change the entire distributor or just the cap???

The whole unit, not the cap has your ignition coil in the back of it.
They tend to go back, i think it also contains a position sensor in it.. its all self contained...

If you changed the cap, it wont do nothing if its not getting electricity from the coil...Ie if the coil is bad. then you must replace distributor housing...
Hope this is of some help

Re: 99 Sebring Wont Start!! PLEASE HELP!!!

I had the same problem. The engine would crank but woudn't start.
After hitting the fuel tank thinking that it might wake up the fuel pump a little, checking the battery and adding water remover to the tank (since we had sub zero temperatures here in Iowa) I ended up replacing the cam position sensor. I took a spark plug out to see if it is throwing a spark. When I took it out it was wet from fuel. Then I was sure that the engine is getting fuel and it could only be the one more thing....the cam position sensor.
It is locate on the driver side of the engine. You need a 5/16 nut driver to replace it. Here is what it looks like.

Hope some of you find this helpfull.

Thanks to everyone here and good luck.

I replaced the cam position sensor. It apears to be a part of ignition control.
It's locate on top of the engine on driver side. You need a 5/16 nutdriver to replace it.
