Re: turbo vs supercharger
turbo, they are both usually around same price and almost about same hp, except one nice thing about a turbo is that when your engine is about to blow up it uses less horsepower too cool it down, and saves the engine, the supercharger doesnt, and the turbo has usually 6 levels of boost to put how much more hp you want to use... anyways they both rock in my opinion though turbo>supercharger...

Re: turbo vs supercharger
um..... never heard of a multi stage turbo, and if they are out there, i wouldnt call them normal. anyway, in my experience, both are perfectly reliable, and safe so long as you use them properly. as far as which is the better power adder, in the past, i would say supercharger, however i am a recent turbo convert, and would have to say now that for a total average power curve, the turbo is best, but for max peak power, the centerfugial supercharger is king. modern turbos also spool up faster, almost negating the instant power responce of a belt driven supercharger, but you cant even compair the ease of installation of a supercharger vs the tangled mess of custom piping required to install a turbo.

Re: turbo vs supercharger
I have a video of a twin turbo grand national and the noise it makes is retardedly loud, it even burns rubber on the chassis dyno.

Re: turbo vs supercharger
If he's building a car to street drag, I think power is gonna be more important over the noise it makes..
Well, im not sure what Diablo was talking about with the 6 stage turbo, You can get a boost controller that will let you adjust how much boost you want to run within the turbo and engine limits.. And im not sure what he meant by taking less horsepower to cool down?? But In my opinion turbochargers are better.. They make less power than superchargers, but a turbo works off waste exhaust gas, so it robs your engine of about 3 horsepower from backpressure.. A supercharger makes more power but runs off of the crank, Ive heard of some superchargers robbing up to 50 horsepower... In terms of dependability, ide say they're about the same.. I think your car would be more streetable with a turbocharger over a supercharger.. The biggest con to turbocharging is, as Iroc mentioned, It is one hell of a job to custom in a turbocharger.. Superchargers can be done in an afternoon

Turbo boost is controlled by how much exhaust pressure and exhause heat is inside the turbine housing. If you want more boost put more pressure and heat in the turbine, if you want less let some out(IE a wasegate) A turbocharger will make more power than a supercharger bar none. They are not as parasidic. Take a top fuel car for example, to make max boost on a top fueler it takes over 1000 HP to spin a top fuel supercharger ( I don't know what size they use.) If you had a Turbo setup on one it would only take about 15 HP to make the same kind of boost. That is why they do not allow turbochargers in top fuel. it would throw alot more power at an already uncontrolable car. That and there is no pratical way to control that ammount of exhaust
I have driven supercharged v-8's and turbocharged v-8's both running 17 PSI of boost and both were similar engines (Supercharged montie carlo with a built 350, Turbocharged Mustang 351W) The turbo engine was sooo much more powerful. Well worth the time and effort IMO

Re: turbo vs supercharger
well hypsi, not to contradict, but it also depends on what kind of supercharger you are talking about. roots style superchargers for the street are the bottom of the mole hill, making less peak and less average power. turbos are next, making much better average power and better peak power. however, a centerfugal supercharger will sacrifice a bit of lower end power, but will make more peak power than the turbo. ive seen more than one back to back to back test to proove this, although it does depend wholy on your setup and options to the power adder.
but i still say the turbo is the best all around choice, if you have the money and patience for the install, if youre looking for great power, thats easy to install, the centerfugal supercharger cant be beat.
