Prelude vs 3000GT Base

Any opinions on who would win? 1995 Prelude Si (non-vtec 160 HP) with I/H/E, High flow cat, and pulleys vs a stock 1995 3000GT Base model (220 HP).

Wish me luck on this project, something always seems to go wrong.

Re: Prelude vs 3000GT Base

i think the 3000gt should be able to take you. if it was a vtec then it would be a drivers race.

Re: Prelude vs 3000GT Base

Should be closer now with your mods, if your car was stock I don't think you would have had much of a chance. But now I say it's a driver race, I wouldn't underestimate the 3000GT Base with a 5-Speed though.

The 3000 is going to be a faster car - the only real hope you have is that the driver isn't any good.

Re: Prelude vs 3000GT Base

Having owned a 3000gt base (for about 2 years, then sold it) and ridden in my friend's prelude alot. I'm pretty sure the 3000gt pulls harder and has better brakes. I think my old front wheel drive 3000gt stuck to the road better too. But then again, I had some really good tires on it. The base model has less power but it also have less weight to compensate.

It is always a drivers race though. IMHO

Re: Prelude vs 3000GT Base

Mistake...the 3000GT Base has 168HP not 220HP.

The 220HP version is the 3000GT SL

Then there's the 320HP version which is the VR4

Thats not quite accurate. In 1995 the base 3000GT had the same horsepower as the SL model. It wasn't until after the demise of the Stealth that the base 3000 went to 161hp http://www.team3s.com/FAQ-Specs1.htm

Yea, I know that the 3000GT Base model dropped to 161 HP in 1996 or whatever, but I know that the one I'm talking about is the 220 HP version, even though it's the base and not SL. Thanks for the responses though.

Re: Prelude vs 3000GT Base

The base model had 164 horses but 200lb ft of torque and weighed only around 2750. A full 1000 pounds lighter than the AWD VR4 twin turbo. It's power to weight is more similar to an integra type R. It has less peak power, but a flatter powerband.

Why wont people listen.... Yogs already explained this. Till 1996 the base model carried the SL engine with 222HP 205 Torque. Plus it was lighter than the SL so it had a bit more advantage. 3000GT wins, hands down.

a stock 3000GT is in the v-tec prelude territory of speed. so if your car is as fast as a v-tec. then it would be a drivers race.

Re: Prelude vs 3000GT Base

I really don't think the SL is that fast. The non-VTEC Prelude is a good 400 pounds lighter than the 3000GT SL (I am going by www.intellichoice.com which uses manufacturer's data, so don't bitch at me). With the Prelude's mods, I'll call it a driver's race.

that maybe true. but on the streetracing forums we got a few SL guys claiming high 14's stock with perfect driver. they know more about the car then me so i'll take their word for it.

edit: then again they could very well be freak SL's. i wish i had a factory freak.
