Hi. This is for all you painters out there. What is the best product to use to clean automotive clear from the spray gun? I use a good solvent for the paint guns, but they are not as effective on clear. Any suggestions?

Re: cleaning spray gun of clear
What kind of clear are you using?
Just flush it with lacquer thinner (as long as you arent using enamel paints). Then clear all the parts with lacquer thinner. After that flush it with Windex...(dont ask, it works wonders). That should work pending on the type of paint.

Thanks Mike, I'll try that. I was applying clear with a gun I had run thinner through and all of a sudden it started to spurt. It looked like I had just textured some drywall. So, I had to resand. I totally took the gun apart and cleaned it in solvent, but I notice that solvend doesn't remove any clear that has had a chance to dry. I'm using the Glasurit 55 product. I will try the windex thing after thoroughly cleaning with thinner. Thank you for the tip. And oh man, that is some ambitious project you have going on. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Re: cleaning spray gun of clear
Is the clear you are using Acrylic-Enamel, Acrylic Urethane, or what? If its enamel, lacquer thinner wont do much to clean it. Like I said, try cleaning the parts with windex, stuff works wonders.
Yes, the project in my signature is ambitous, as well as bitchy. Its like a woman, it will work when it wants to.

Re: cleaning spray gun of clear
If your gun is "pulsing" (for lack of a better descriptive word) theres a good chance your sucking air somewhere.Reassemble the gun and make sure everything is tight and none of the gaskets are damaged. We use Naked Gun in our gun cleaner but would work well to soak your gun in overnite.Disolves much better than regular drum thinners.

Re: cleaning spray gun of clear
It could even be a over used tip , if its burned out it will pulse as well as have a smaller fan spray and be putting too much product on as well.
As for the cleaning , use the same reducer you were when reducing the paint only use it straight to clean out the gun , just spraying it through the lines isnt going to ensure that it is clean so learn to disassemble the gun and clean all the nooks and crannies with pipe cleaning tools using the reducer as the cleaner , you could even let them soak in the reducer indavidually.
