rear end services required (again)

suit up boys cause i need you again. so i swapped out my rear-axle two weekends ago, thing worked magically for a couple weeks untili tonight. i was drivin around and suddenly i started to get a creaking/clunking sound. now, it only makes the noise in reverse and when i make a turn in reverse (i.e. if im goin in a strait line it dont do it). also, it only does it when its in gear (i.e. if im in neutral it dont do it). i couldnt really determine where the noise was coming from too well inside the car but it sounded like it was in the center, probably from the rear half of the car. im thinkin maybe bum differential but i dont know bout these things. any takers on this one?

ps- sorry bout the long post...

Re: rear end services required (again)

just got a look at my axle. first thing i noticed when i got under the car is that ive got a wet leak coming from around the pinion. there's a good bit of oil all over my torque arm and exhaust. im guessing my pinion seal is bad. now my question is could this be responsible for the problem ive described above...

Re: rear end services required (again)

umm i dunno.... it could, maybe the pinion is jumping when you put it in gear, but it should do it when you put it in D also.. hmmmmmmm maybe its something other then the rear axle making the noise....

Re: rear end services required (again)

it almost sounds like one of the brake calipers is stuck engaged and the wheel is popping as it rolls, but i dont think that is a plausible cause considering that my emergency brake is not hooked up right now (thats a different and non related problem). i dont know could there be something wrong with the u-joints? also i was reading some old posts that said a similar noise was made but not under the same conditions and those were transmission mounts...

Re: rear end services required (again)

and my car use to do the same thing, the rubber thing on the trans mount or the torque arm thing ripped and sometimes it would smack when i put it into gear....

Re: rear end services required (again)

well i would say that its not brakes, otherwise it would be doing it all the time, forward, backward, strait, in a turn, if it was just a pinion seal, same deal, whenever the driveshaft turned the pinion, it would do it. seeing as it only does it in turns, i would say its the differential carrier, something internal let go, probly the clutch packs, but could be something else. but id say thats where the problem is.

Re: rear end services required (again)

eh dont fret, might be something simple, just a bad set of clutches, or a loose bolt or something along those lines. i think if the whole rear end grenaded youd know it by now.

Re: rear end services required (again)

well my point is that i have a 30 day warranty on the end so i can either try to fix this one and run with it, or just get my money back and try to find another one. it's a tough decision when 500 bucks is on the line...
