A/C - I need help!!

A/C tends not to be very cool except at higher speeds, decreases at lower speeds - Mechanic tested w/hoses, pressed carburator, said faster it goes, more cool air - slower it goes less cool air. Of course acelleration shows higher than decelleration, but I'm a woman and I wonder if he thought he could take me to the cleaners saying to replace compressor @ $800. I need help! Can anyone tell me what other possible problem there is? Can a car use freon yet not leak it as there isn't any freon leak? Thanks!!

Re: A/c cooler high speed/less on low speed

No power lost when A/C turned on - low speed, less cooling - higher speed more cooling, then coolness goes back down to less cooling.
