You might take a look at a 1 - 2 year old Chrysler Sebring 2 door with the 3 liter 200HP V-6 and some remaining factory warranty. Its quick, has about a 127mph top end, and will get 30mpg running 70 on the interstate. Because of Chrysler's lousy resale value, you should be able to get a deal on one. I've run a bunch of the mid-size Chryslers to 100K (business travel) with no major problems. Another candidate worth a look would be a little Buick with the 3.8 V-6, but, they tend to be pricier. In defference to the import car fans, the stuff in your price range will be a good bit older, have higher mileage, no warranty, and can be a money pit.

Re: looking for a car under 10k
The car needs to last a long time, so you can forget about any Chrysler. Try a late 80s/early 90s Toyota Supra or Nissan 300ZX.

You can probably can get a 1990 Mercedes Benz 300 CE with 100,000 miles for about 6-10k. Great cars and dependable. A bit old but you will enjoy it for cruising in.

My personal pick would be the Nissan 300ZX, but if you prefer schnitzel to sushi, try the BMW 3 Series or Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The Z is faster, the Germans are nicer rides.

Pontiac Grand Prix GTP. Superchargered 3.8 V6, come in both 2 and 4 door varients and you won't get raped on insurance assuming you're under 25. Extremely reliable, easy to work on, fun to drive, plenty of power. Good aftermarket support too.
