whats the difference between sr20det (red top) and and sr20det (black top)?

RedTops were in the 89-93 models and the BlackTops were in the 94-98 models, domething like that, I think the only major difference is lower mileage.

But then there's the S14 Blacktop which has VVT and is like twice the price, it also has a ball bearing turbo and like 15 extra horsepower.

wrong, they were red and blacktops offered in the same years. They are pretty much the same

well from test driving both and owneing a 98 sr20det i can say from stock red top is slower but its easyer to work on the 98 is kind of hard to tune at high hp because of the vvt but depends it can also be faster cuz of vvt it depends on u to what are u willing to spend as well and wat kind of car you have because if u have a s13 get a s13 motor would be best if u have a s14 getting a s14 motor would be better
