95 Maxima questions ( steering related)

Hi all .. My questions concern a 95 with 100,000 miles on it .. first when
parked and turning the steering wheel the engine speed increases about
50 to 100 RPM .. never used to be this pronounced ... the other question ,, I think I know what the problem is just wondering if anyone else out there has come across a similar problem .. there is a short of some type in the steering column .. every now and then get a puff of smoke or burning smell ... LOL .. no not from the seat , from the steering.. thanks in advance for your help , comments
