cold air intake

i have a 97 prelude SI and just had my buddy install an AEM COI, the one that runs close to the ground, i have been told to be careful when it is raining because water could get into the intake manifold, has anyone experienced a problem with this, is it worth getting a water deverter, does that take and hp away, and what about snow, should i worry about that as well?

it depends on where you live. does it rain a lot where you live?

some say you don't have to worry about it unless the filter gets submerged completely underwater.

yea, don't worry about it. i have the AEM CAI, and when its rained a lot, i have accidentally driven into some big puddles and gotten scared as fuck, but still no problems. i have the bypass valve sitting in my closet, but i haven't installed it since i don't feel like sawing my pipe. your pretty much safe as long as you reinstall your guards correctly

<edit> P.S.: if you do run into a puddle, quickly hit the clutch, do NOT rev the engine, u want to reduce the chances of the engine sucking in water by having it suck in less air. either way, a little water never hurt any engine, its a lot that fucks it up

I have a aem CAI and have not put a bypass valve on it yet but my car sits real low and i worry alot about puddles i wanted to know if any of u had pictures of the splash guard and ur filter cause my splash guard pretty beat up and i dont if its that important.?

while i've heard of people hydrolocking their engines, it's very unlikely anyone with good sense would ever do so. if you're smart, you won't drive your prelude into standing water unless you're really familiar with the road and know it's not that deep. nonetheless, the filter would really have to be completely submerged. even if it's partially submerged, probably not gonna happen unless you're flooring it, creating more suction. god knows why anyone would do that anyways.

My friend in his nissan ser floored it in a bigass puddle one night and fucked up his whole engine. so yea, there are some stupid ass people that would do that

Whenever I had my first Prelude, I forgot my CAI on my car when it rained, and I hydrolocked my motor. I've heard the bypass valve works, and I've also heard it doesn't work, so its up to you if you want to put it on your car

ummm, i had a aem bypass valve on my intake that came when i got the car but the dumb ass put it right between the intake and the throttle body and they have to be put past that one sensor any way so i took it off and i havent got a new one yet cause i dont wanna cut my pie just yet but the people on aem web site says u barely loose any hp, if you put one on and its for sure gonna help if your filter becomes completly submerged, which ill never go through a puddle that deep. what im wondering is jus when it rains do aem intakes suck in water that gets splashed up on the filter?

HERE"s a BRIGHT IDEA When it ruins take off ur second part of ur Cold Air and if it's a one-piece then just take off the intake just diconnected it from the Fuel-Injec. no need to take it all off...ur car will still turn on and run....hahaha simple smart idea if u really belive that it will hurt ur engine tho it's a 99.99 percent chance nothing will ever happen...

i thank u miss understood me all i was talkin about was that bypass valve have to go on a lower part of the pipe and not the top btween the pipe and the throttle body. i i jus took out the bypass valve out put my intake bak into the trhottle body. and every thing is fine i and running a one piec aem intake with kand n filter.

don't worry about it. i've plowed snow on my drive to work with my front bumber basically, and never had a problem, and my intake sticks out a hole i cut in the plastic gaurd (well it's flush against it). with a 2.5 inch drop on my car. remember that's why there is a filter. but never drive it through deep enough water to suck it straight up, i'm not saying that. but rain won't hurt it.
