starter and thermostat replacement

Hello everyone,

Quick question. I have limited car experience: 1) Ford CV fuel filter replacement, 2) Ford CV plugs and wires, 3) Ford & Caprice brakes, 4) Caprice water pump replacement and all v-belts. So as you see, some experience, but by no means comfortable doing jobs yet...

I have a friend (zero car knowledge) and in some financial trouble. He has a 98 cav. and needs the starter and thermostat replaced. I said I'd love to help him so long as I feel I can do the jobs without messing up more than I'm fixing.

Could I get any tips, hints, how to's....from any of you who have done a starter replacement and/or a thermostat replacement? What all am I getting into? Anything I need to be aware of that typically causes people problems, etc???

Any advice is sure appreciated!

tell him to buy a repair manual at the local autoparts store. that is the best start you can get.

Removal Procedure

Notice
When adding coolant, use DEX-COOL® coolant. If silicated coolant is added to the system, premature engine, heater core or radiator corrosion may result. In addition, the engine coolant will require change sooner-at 50 000 km (30,000 mi) or 24 months.



Caution
Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.


Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Drain the coolant to level below the thermostat. Recover the coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System .

Remove the radiator coolant outlet pipe attaching bolts.

Remove the coolant outlet.

Remove the thermostat.
Clean the mating surfaces of the radiator outlet and the radiator outlet pipe.


Installation Procedure

Install the thermostat.

Install the coolant outlet.

Notice
Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Install the coolant outlet attaching bolts. Tighten
Tighten the coolant outlet bolts to 14 N·m (124 lb in).

Refill the engine coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System .
Connect the negative battery cable.
Inspect for leaks.

Starter Motor Replacement
Removal Procedure

Caution

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the air inlet duct to the throttle body.

Remove the top starter bolt.
Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
Remove the lower starter bolt.
Position the engine wiring harness aside.
Position the starter for access to solenoid wiring.
Remove the electrical wiring.
Remove the starter.


Installation Procedure

Install the electrical wiring.
Position the starter to the engine.
Install the lower starter bolt.
Reposition the engine wiring harness.
Lower the vehicle.
Install the top starter bolt.
Install the air inlet duct to the throttle body.
Install the negative battery cable.

These came straight from the GM manual, though I don't agree with order. I always remove all electrical connections first, and install them last.
