Whats your visualization of the sun dieing?

OK, this was one of the scareiest thoughts I thought of, when I went skiing in Colorado February of 2003. I imagined the sun dying, right in front of my eyes. It scared the living daylights out of me (hahh, living daylights). I was at Beaver Creek, Colorado, and i was on a ski lift, going towards the top of the mountain. When the horizon came, it was late afternoon, and you could see the sun setting in the west, just about near sun set, around 3 or 4, maybe even as late as 5. Then i just thought, what it would look like to see the sun dieing. I visualized the sun, bright, but pretty big, the size it would be around 3, 4 or 5 pm. Then, it starts to get dark, like an eclipse, and I see the sun turn a dark red, to a bold orange, with like a black ring around it, and the sky turns the same bold orange as teh sun, a bit lighter thought. THe black ring around the sun gets larger like it's being engulfed by something. Then, as science would come in, the gravity increases so I would see little specs, like space material getting sucked into a sun( the death of a star, often results in large forces of gravity and a black hole). THen the light would dissappear completely, and then one last flash of light, thus ending the death of the star. THen my visual stopped.

I already know this wouldn't happen for several million or even billion years. But it's my visual of the sun dying. You have one?

If the sun digresses to a RED GIANT... it will expand to the orbit of Mars, and so the first four planets, including the third rock from the sun, will be engulfed. In another option, the Sun will collapse in an itself and then become a supernova, which I'm pretty sure would eradicate hte solar system... interesting about this option, we would not see this until 8 minuets after it happened.

joseph1082 took my thoughon this one too. the earth will be vaporized before the sun goes out. if we are luck though the sun will only slowly turn in on itself afer most of its energy is spent and it will turn into a neutron star pulling us closer to it, but not althe way in and the burning less brightly, but more closely for an estimated 100 billion years as the neutrons themselves break down into pure light.

The Sun will be come a giant before it fades away. Its predicted that it will probably expand to the orbit of the Earth, but even if it doesn't the earth will still be vaporized. This happens when the sun runs out of hydrogen and starts burning helium for fuel sometime after 3-4 billion more years. Once the helium is used up - several hundred million years - the sun will shed its outer gasses and then condense into a white dwarf.

There is not nearly enough matter in the sun for it to become a supernova. No explosions for our star.

Well here is my visualization of the sun dieing. A bright flash of light then all of a sudden everything goes pitch black as the final light slowly fades...

Bingo.

Except that last one.

We wouldn't be around to watch our sun explode.
As the sun collapses, our planet would cease to function, we would all be dead a few million years before it reached HammerTime.

With that 1st option as well, the sun will actually, keep expanding, to the orbit of mars, then just disintergrate (i'm trying to word this in a way someone will understand it) as solar flares, and just keep going out, but not as a start, as gasses. There will be a white dwarf left.

And yes, a supernova will eradicate the solarsystem. The nearest star to us that will end in a supernova is a few thousand lightyears away, if it explodes, we will feel it. Literally. I'm not sure to what extent, someone help me on that one, It's been 2 years since I did astronemy.

Yogs: It was my understanding that the sun WILL nova once the helium burns up, because of the force of the collapsing matter on itself. Am i incorrect in this assumption?

Re: Whats your visualization of the sun dieing?

The End of the Stellar lifespa has two possiblities, one less violent than the onther... the first is the red giant option, which will eventually collapse to a dwarf, or a viloent supernova, which will leave a black hole or neutron star.

Re: Whats your visualization of the sun dieing?

Our star isn't powerful enough to go supernova. it will most likely become a red giant then as the exterior gasses dissapate, the core gasses will become a white drawf star.

That is a possiblity, but not for our star.
Our star is pathetic, it'll just use up all it's energy and get fatter.

Meanwhile, thousands of lightyears away, huge ass stars are working out, getting thinner working off all the phat, then they'll explose and guts will go everywhere.

Yeah - if there were enough matter in the Sun then it would go nova when it collapses under the weight of gravity. However, it doesn't have enough, so the outer shells of the sun will dispurse and the center will condense into a white dwarf.
