92 LE front rotors warping AGAIN

when i got the car from my mom in nov 03 i had the brakes redone including new rotors up front since they were warped. then in feb the rotors warped again so i had them turned. now i can feel the pedal vibrate and the car shake a little when braking hard. it isnt as bad when braking light. at about 10 mph i can feel the brake pedal move up and down.

what could be causing the rotors to warping prematurely? brake masters told me it was because of the wet roads (snow in feb). it made sense since the rotors would cool down really fast. but i moved to a much warmer climate (105 highs right now) and rotors are still warping.

Cheap rotors?
Try using factory parts. There have been a lot of brake pad formulation changes. Rotors shouldn't be warping unless a caliper is sticking or rotors were of poor initial quality.

Re: 92 LE front rotors warping AGAIN

It is possible that uneven tightening of the wheel lug nuts could cause the rotor to warp.

Re: 92 LE front rotors warping AGAIN

I had this problem with my 94 XLE 4 cylinder with antilock brakes when it was new and still under warranty. The brakes would start pulsating after about an hour of driving. The dealer could never find the problem. I found it myself one day. When the problem started occuring, I raced home and jacked up the front of the car and tried to turn each wheel by hand. One wheel was much more difficult to turn than the other. That caliper was sticking. The piston was sticking and not retracting. I raced over to Toyota while the car was still hot and had them put it up on the hoist and check it immediately. They agreed with my diagnosis, although they couldn't explain why it would happen only after a certain amount/time of driving it, and ordered a new caliper for me. That new caliper and a new rotor on that side (I insisted on that new rotor as the old one was super heated too many times) solved the problem. YMMV.

My daughter was overheating rotors like crazy. She was going thru them every 12 months it seemed like.

Finally put on cross-drilled rotors and ceramic pads ($48). Seems to have cured. Used Brembo rotors, which are good name brand rotors. They are advertised on Ebay a lot.

I called one of the vendors and didn't have to go thru Ebay. Bought direct from the vendor.

Regards

red-in-la - Nothing personal, but the problem with eating up brakes was most likely your daughter's driving habits and not the rotors and pads. Dollars to dohnuts, she was keeping her foot on the brake alot when she was driving. People do this without even realizing it. She is still going to eat up pads unless her problem is solved.

my camery was doing the same.one of the two bolts that hold the caliper.the ones with the rubber boots.one was stuck.grease was all sticky causing caliper to wear rotor uneven.

You have 2 calipar bolts (with rubber boots) that the calipars slide on.... You must clean & regrease...

Another common cause of warping is exposure to cold when the rotors are hot. A rotor with no other problems will be hot to some degree after driving, and even hotter if driving habits include riding the brakes or there's a dragging pad. Coming off the road after a trip and washing the car, for instance, can subject the rotors to enough shock to warp them.
Different rotors have different tolerance for the shock, but I've had a similar rpoblem with my Outback and I avoiding this shock has helped.
