Question Drag Racing- #1 Way to Launch a Car?

I've heard from many people their opinions of how to launch a car from 0 MPH or from a starting position. But really... which one is the best?

1) Hold Brake -> Gas -> Burnout -> Signal Start -> Take Off

2) Hold Brake -> Neutral -> Gas-> Rev RPM's Mid-High Range -> Signal Start -> Shift to Drive/1st Gear -> Take off

3) Start 2nd Gear -> Hold Brake-> Gas-> Rev RPM's Mid-High Range -> Signal Start -> Downshift to 1st Gear -> Take Off

4) Start 1st Gear -> Hold Brake -> Gas -> Rev RPM's Mid-High Range -> Signal Start -> Take off

5) Start with 1st gear and climb up gears normally.

Or anything you guys think... so what's best?

Re: Drag Racing- #1 Way to Launch a Car?

A proper launch technique will be very different for each car ... launching a FWD car is very different from RWD which is very difeerent from AWD ....

Launching a turbo car is very different than launching a supercharged car ...

Regardless of what you are launching, you want to be in 1st gear and revving before you are ready to leave the line.

The question is: how high to rev and how fast to let the clutch engage.

If you are doing a burnout, you do not do it at the line. You do it many feet before the line in the "burnout box" ... then you roll up to start the lights.

I've never had a need to use the brakes at the line.

Re: Drag Racing- #1 Way to Launch a Car?

also you dont want to heat up street tires only drag slick or radials

and practice is the best way to launch your car trust me i am trying to practice that right now myself cause my times suck

Also make sure that if you are racing street tires that your tires are completely dry because if they are not, your car will spin at the lights and u have a horrible reaction time.

Correction: Spinning at the lights would give you a poor 60' time ... not a poor reaction time.

Re: Drag Racing- #1 Way to Launch a Car?

best FWD auto launch:
rev to about 2500rpm while holding your brake and hitting the gas at the same time while in gear(powerbrake)

Best manual tranny launch FWD:
rev up to about 2000rpm and dump the clutch right as the tree is dropping on green

best turbo awd auto launch:
powerbrake it until the turbo is spooling at full boost or your car starts creeping forward and let her rip

best turbo awd manual tranny launch:
rev to about 4500rpm and turbo spoolin hard and dump the clutch hoping you wont bog on your 60ft.

if you dont want to destroy your auto tranny then NEVER drop it in gear while rev'd to a high rpm

i never raced a RWD car so i couldnt tell you my preference on launching it

.my opinion.

Correction: Spinning at the lights does give you a poor reaction time because your car is not being propelled forward, its just sitting there spinning...I know...It happened to me with my mustang until we put new tires on it.

It is not just sitting. It is fighting for traction.
Regardless of how bad your tires are and how bad you are at launching, you are going to move enough to trip the reaction light ... unless you are sitting there with a line lock engaged.
