Update, Recall & Service Engine light

Greetings,
My '02 I35 went to the dealer on June 8th for the recall notice about the crankshaft sensor. I also had another problem, the "service engine" light came on about one week ago. My car has 20,450 miles on it. It gets the best of care, Mobil One oil since 3,500 miles, tire rotations etc.
After about two hours of work I got the car back. It's all better! Luckily all the work was covered by the warranty. The bill came to $511.45. It's being billed to "factory." The crank sensor cost $101.07. The 1/2 hour labor rate for that repair was $47.38.
The "service engine" light was NOT related to the crank sensor. In some cases it can be but not mine. The technician told me he replaced the two "rear" oxygen (O2) sensors. He also re-programmed the computer. The cost for that work was $230.35 for two O2 sensors and $132.65 for the labor. He told me the new O2 sensors were "faster" and could keep pace with the computer. The G35s, Q45s and our I30/I35s are all having this problem. It's not related to the gasoline either. I asked about bad gas, the stuff that has a little too much sulfur in it. The tech said it was not a problem. Same for running 89 octane in the car instead of 92 octane. As long as the car doesn't ping under hard acceleration you can use the 89 octane and save some cash. Nissan cars are having the same problems. The 350Z has the same crankshaft sensor recall. Same for the O2 sensors on some cars.
That's the story. Sure am glad the warranty covered these repairs!
Regards,
Shortimer

Re: Update, Recall & Service Engine light

I have a 2001 I30 with 38,000 miles. The service engine soon light came on a few weeks ago. The dealer diagnostics said it needed the two O2 sensors which thet replace under warranty at no charge.
