Top Speed Limiter

It appears that the Factory computer has limited my top speed to 95 mph. With over 400 hp under the hood I'd like to see what my truck can do. Aside from disableing the top speed limiter with a Hypertech reprogramming system or a chip is there any other way to disable this Factory system.

Mahalo,

Re: Top Speed Limiter

I have dealt with the same deal on my 2000 Sierra. I'm at 2800 RPM when my limiter kicks in @97MPH. I would like to see the rest of the story without installing a chip.

speed limiter

the only way to bypass or change your speed limiter, 1998 or newer, is with a Hypertech tuner.

your computer is programable. 1997 and older were learned units that had to have a new PROM (chip) installed, to change any fuel/timing inputs.

look at the bright side: at least you can change it with little or no effort.

Re: Top Speed Limiter

Mahalo guys! Because my Truck is equipted with a Whipple Supercharger I can't mess with the Factory computer EXCEPT to change the speed limiter. I just didn't want to buy a Hypertech tuner ($300+) for just that purpose. 400+ hp and I can't get pass 95mph. I do get there awfully fast though.....!

Guess I'll live with it - FOR NOW!!!

Re: Top Speed Limiter

wait you spent 3-4 grand for a supercharger and 5-6 hours putting it on and you have a problem spending $300 and 20 minitutes to increase your top speed to 129.

so after bragging to everyone about how your supercharged 400+ hp truck really moves i would love to see your face when the guy who spent 300 for the proggrammer blows by when your truck falls flat on its face at 95.

i spent the money and time putting a supercharger on mine and had no problem spending the extra 300 so i wouldn't have to hide my face as someone blew by me at 110

Re: Top Speed Limiter

see if you can sweet talk a friend at a dealer to go inside and disable the limiter all together.

if you bought the truck setup already ,make sure you got the programer for the s/c, most kits come with a hand held programer that changes the timing and fuel settings, if you take it somewhere and they accedently reprogram the computer you could have some serios proplems.
if you didn't you might want to call whipple and see if there kit came with one, if it did you definitly want to get a replacement, and ask if they can set it up to do the basic adjustments shift, rpm, speed, tire, gear ect.
try and kill two birds with one stone.

my s/c came with one from superchip (it was a powerdyne)

truck moved even with 35" tires, too bad the peice of shit locked up on the highway in vermont last year.
really miss the extra power, going to try a magna charger later this summer
you might want to get some traction springs from jcwhitney or traction bars, i got some stainless from rcd had the springs on before, really help the truck hook up off the line and keep the springs wrap from making the tires hop.

Re: Top Speed Limiter

Mahalo guys! I'll check my Chevy (dealer) sources to see if I can get someone there to kill the top speed limiter. I'm pretty sure (but, then what do I know...) the Whipple doesn't come with a program tuner. I've got the installation manual and there is no mention of it. Aside from that, no one I dealt with mentioned one. I was told and it's mentioned in the insattlation manual not to mess witht the factory computer (with the exception of the top speed limiter. It also states not to mess with the Whipple computer. I'll check with Whipple to see wht is allowed.....

The State (HAWAII) just passed a law that can cause you to lose your license for up to 5 yrs if you are caught: 1) going 35 mph over the limit, 2) street racing, AND 3) going over "90" mph.

That being the case I'm not in a rush to over ride the T S Limiter. But it will go one day.

Hey guys, just so you know. A hypertech programmer will NOT remove you top speed limiter. It will only allow you to raise it about 10 mph. The only way to remove it is to install a JET SCU-2000. It allows transmission shift points and speedometer calibration for vehicles where tire size or gear changes are required. It also eliminates the top speed limiter in these applications. It simply plugs in to the transmission and is adjusted with the turn of a switch. It will run about $125 but well worth it.

Re: Top Speed Limiter

^^I have a hypertech and have had my speedo pegged out. Of course I don't have proof of it since I nearly ran off the road taking a pic of the speedo at 105 in my sig below.

Like mjgjr said there are levels at which you can set the top speed to depending on the speed rating for your tire with the Hypertech.
