z31 cv-joint

has anyone out there ever had to have the cv joint(s) on their car replaced? how much did it cost, or is it something that i could do with the parts, basic tools and a repair manual? any help would be greatlly appriciated.

I am not 100% sure on the Z31s. But I know for Z32 it is expensive, and time consuming, for even the Nissan Mechanics.

I would HIGHLY suggest getting a local shop to do it.

Expect around $250-$450 my mechanic says. Pending on how much of an ass your mechanic is. Typically however much your parts are, expect twice as much (on CV Joints its a bit more) for installation.

false alarm. it turns out the differential mounting insulatoris broken. so the differential is pretty much floating there. all i heard was a knock and i assumed it was the cv's. the mechanic said, besides this, the car is back up to perfect running order. but he is giving me an estimate of $500!!!! When a brand new peice costs $190 from Victoria British, and its not like its a hard repair. i think you guys are right, its about time i get a new mechanic.............that cheap bastard

Alright dude. I know you already know what your problem is. But I'm saying this stuff for future reference so joe schmoo can find it for help.
Any way. If it is the joint on you cv shaft goin bad you will hear a clicking sound when you turn.
To replace this you could either take the knuckle apart and change the carriage and rollers, blah blah, this is time consuming and you have to have the right tools.
It would be easier to change the whole cv shaft, prolly cheaper in some cases.
If you buy the cv shaft from a mechanic it'll run you upwards of $200.
The ones from aftermarket stores like autozone, advanced auto parts, etc. are just as good but cost less.
Changing is fairly easy; however, it helps to have a little muscle to do this.
I just changed the driverside cv shaft on my celica and i was told by a mechanic that it would be a b****. yes it was hard to get out cause of a ring on the end holding it in. Pry bars work best to pry it out of the tranny. Putting the new one in just takes some umph and if the grooves are lined up it will go in. (this is where the muscle comes handy.)
All in all i invested $110 -$45 for the core, and about 8 hours. (we ran into trouble cause the guys at AZ gave us the wrong part.)

AZ guys are morons...I went there looking for a K&N cone filter yesterday and they didn't know what I was talking about...so I ordered it off Jegs...:-D
