Talking Need tips on selling my car...

I have to sell my '96 Spyder GS-T because we have an addition to the family. I'm having a hard time with this since I love that car, but I have to.

Anyways, I was wondering about some things and thought maybe someone can help. I was going to trade in my car, but thought it would be better just to sell it to a private party. I still owe one more year of payments on it and it has about 103,000 miles on it. I did go on the DMV site and was able to print off some forms for release of liability, etc. What I would like to know is, has anyone had problems trying to sell their car, with payments still owed on it, to a private party? Is it just better to trade it in?

1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS-T
(everything is stock except for rims & tires)
asking $7500/OBO

~ Well maintained
~ Low profile tires/premium rims
~ 103,000 miles
~ A/C, tilt steering, power windows/locks
~ Driver/passenger air bags
~ AM/FM Radio, CD/Cassette
** Extras - car cover, bra, and tire chains

Do you think I'm asking too much? Need some help.
Thanks in advance!

you'll probably have a problem selling it private party if you still owe the bank money as to get the title to the guy the bank needs the money... and unless there is something you can work out ?? your buyer probably wont be to keen on handing over money without a title.

price wise.. I'd never pay that much for it but look on cars.com and autorader.com and im sure you'll plenty of cars like yours selling for around the same price... expect somebody with half a brain to pay you like $6700-6900 (still overpriced IMO) and you should be ok.

Re: Need tips on selling my car...

check out www.kbb.com first and get the price from them for a private party sale.

first of all state if it is a manual or AT

make sure it is stated that it is 100% stock other than wheels and tires [i was not sure if that would have made it in the description ] i would add that it has never been driven hard or raced. also that the oil has been changed every 3000 miles [you did do that right?], and all scheduled maintinence [30k, 60k, 90k] has been performed.

this is all really redundant, but will add to the theory that it is a fully taken care of, not pushed hard car. [which it is i'm sure!]

good luck!

Re: Need tips on selling my car...

i just did a KBB on it and for a manual 'excellent' it is $7600 and AT 'ex' it is $7830, so your price is right on. i would even offer it for 8k obo just to be like that...

Like other said check places like autotrader and cars.com to compare prices. You might have problems selling the car seeing that you still have payments left. I wouldnt tell everyone in the beginning that you owe payments (you will eventually), just to get more offers and for ppl to take a look at it. Make sure to include that the car is clean and it hasnt been raced or been in an accident (keeping in mind that these are both true .)

Price wise, it sounds fine. Good Luck and keep us updated.

I know I won't get what I'm asking, I'm willing to go as low as $6500. It is in good condition. I am going to call my bank and figure out how to take care of the payments, etc.

Thanks for your help!

Either way, if it's in the $6,000's, I'm happy. I just need to clean it up before we post an ad.

Thanks!

Re: Re: Need tips on selling my car...

like i said i would put it up for 8k, simply because it is a turbo spyder and someone may pay that much for it. and the blue book is almost that...

Thumbs up Thanks Guys!

I just wanted to let you all know that we opted to trade in the car ('96 Spyder GST) instead of selling it. We thought it wouldn't be worth putting in all that money, etc. so we decided against it. The trade in value was also how much was owed on the car and we were able to do the trade with no money down on the new one.

We bought a 2005 Toyota Scion XB and we are happy with the purchase. It was sad to see my baby go, but I got a family to think about now. Maybe I can fix up this car and put some rims on it.

Thanks again for your help!
