How do I change the starter?

I have a 1996 Voyager with a 2.5L four cyl. The starter seems to be connected by one bolt only...at least, thats what it looks like from above ( I havent crawled under it yet). Can the starter be removed without crawling underneath? Is there any things I should know before trying to pull it out?

Thanks for any help

Re: How do I change the starter?

The starter on my 97 3.0 needed to be removed from the bottom. The Chilton manual shows only one procedure for all years 96 to 99.

The car will need to be jack stands or ramps. Disconnect the Neg. battery terminal.
Remove the positive nut & wire from the sater motor.
Remove the 3 starter to transaxle bellhousing mounting bolts.
Very easy job. Have the starter checked before you replace it. It could battery issues.

Changing starter

Excellent! Thanks for the help. The battery is new so I know it is the starter. I think it's the solenoid because I've started turning the key on and sitting for 5 seconds or so before turning it over which seems to allow the pinion gear enough time to mesh with the flywheel.

Thanks again

starter connections

Forgot to mention that the starter wire connections could be fouled due to its position under the engine.(oil, dirt, etc.)

The auto parts stores check starters for free.
