Thermo / Temp switch location for / on radiator for 94 Ford Escort

Hey everybody. I have a 1994 Ford Escort LX. The radiator fan will not turn on when the engine temps get hot. I have tested the relay switch, (still good) and have manually engauged the relay switch and the radiator fan kicks on, so I know the fan works as well. The only other thing the book says is that the temperature / thermo switch could be bad and to replace it. Usually I've seen these electric switches with two wires coming from it on the radiator but I cannot seem to find it on this darn car. Anybody know where it is located? Thanks for any helpful info.

The temp switch is located on the right hand side of the engine right below the thermostat.. there is a sensor that sends a signal to the computer and then along side it there is a single wire thermocouple that sends a signal to the temp gauge.. both of them are in some piping that go to the engine.

If you have a 1.9 or 2.0, the temp switch is right beside the temp gauge sender, but you got to take the hose from the air filter to the head off to find it.

On my 1.9, the switch was OK, another wasn't any improvement, put an ohmmeter on the contacts and heat the part that goes into the pipe with a lighter, if the resistance decreases much, the switch is probably OK.

Some say the problem with the fan never coming on relates to the computer, others say the ignition switch, maybe some of both.

I shorted the hot wire at the relay to the low speed of the fan a couple months / 2000 miles ago, it still runs cool. Only the run wire went dead maybe 6 weeks ago, so I hooked it to the always hot wire in the fan relay. Got tired of putting it on and off whenever I started/stopped the motor, and put a relay between with the coil powered by a lead from the running lights.

Crude, but hey I want to see it get through to smog check time before I replace that $100+ ignition switch.

The 1.7/1.8 is way different from the 1.9/2.0 motor.
