first, check to see if your radiator fans are working, if they are, then take the thermostat out of your car. If that still does not cure the problem, then you probably have a faulty water pump.

Could be any of those problems, Could even be your actual radiator....that would suck, hopefully out of all those possibles, its the thermostat. Good luck

Re: car is running hot

Yea i have the exact same problem. It's not the thermostat because even if you drive you should be over heating if it's a bad thermostat. I still havent figured out why mine is running hot when i idle. So when u find out the problem give me back a holler

Re: car is running hot

my 96 ta just started to overheat as well. i replaced the thermo and it still did it, so i had it checked out and they said it was a leaking water pump and a leaking radiator. but i think they just want more money from me, so im starting with the water pump to see if it fixes the problem

Re: car is running hot

That is actually happening to my car right now and no, the thermostat is not the problem (I realise after wasting my money on a new one.) It's simply that while you idle and aren't moving, obviously there is no cool air cooling down the coolant in your radiator... it's doing opposite from the engine heat. I know it sux, but unless you wanna change out the whole system, just don't sit and idle forever... It wastes gas too!
