Re: 5th gen accord weight
that's weird. i was comparing accords to preludes, and figured accords had to weigh a lot more, but preludes were 3k too

Re: 5th gen accord weight
okay i went to a scale today, 3100, within 20 lbs., w/ me (obviously) not in the car. damn. i woulda guessed a lot more. look at my mods, heavy wheels, huge ass subwoofer box, 4 door, etc. gotta say i was happy to hear that, though part of me doubted her at first, she was very confident

Re: 5th gen accord weight
Wow, not bad. I'm running with nothing in my car except my spare tire (no tools, no subs, nothing) but it still feels heavy as hell. I suspect new struts and tie bars will help in how it feels when cornering (right now it feels like a slug).

Re: 5th gen accord weight
Jazer do me a favor... on the driver door jam check the honda posted weight and see how it compares to the scale... I know you have mods but it may ballpark, Thanks

Re: 5th gen accord weight
ya jajimo i know it feels heavy as hell. i cannot understand how people strip their daily driven cars down to sheet metal. i got a pretty solid diet in mind for my car, but am not gonna take out / swap the things i have in mind until i get a personal scale so i can tell how much i got out + if the weight difference is worth it. we got the same car so if it goes well i'm gonna post it up in my cardomain pages, i'm aiming for a 100lb drop, this is with back seats and carpeting (in the cabin anyways). i know it's not much, but definitely all i can do w/o sacrificing things that just aren't worth sacrificing for trivial weight. you'll prolly still be slimmer if you don't even have subs (although i'm considering taking out the spare, prolly a dumb move that'll bite me in the ass first time i'm far from my apt. but i'll learn i guess).

Re: 5th gen accord weight
well the project continued today, got another 10.5 lbs from the floor mats (who needs those anyways) actually the carpet beneath was way cleaner (as it should be), so my car looks nicer, and i'm sure it's not too hard to replace this should the need arise. ALSO, I WEIGHED THE SEATS!!! and the fenders too. here's the deal, on mine anyways (1995 accord ex sedan). the seats are definitely worth swapping out. my driver's seat weighed in at a hp killing 48lbs, and though the passenger seat doesn't have the motor in it, i'm sure that's not a huge weight difference between the two. soooo, on the lookout for fixed back racing seats, which should be 10-20lb/each, for a total drop of anywhere from 60 - 80lb from seats. plus they'll hold me better how i drive and just look badass. now, the fenders on the other hand, surprised me. going from a steel hood to cf supposedly saves a lot of weight (though no one ever actually gives numbers, and i feel the difference may not be as large as everyone thinks). the left fender weighed in at five and a half pounds. still looking for fenders because mine have rust, but gonna go steel for a more guaranteed fitment than w/ fiberglass, which will not save you more than 2-3 lbs/side.

Re: 5th gen accord weight
okay, diet is going better. w/ full interior (ie all seats/carpet still intact), ac, full stereo, and full sound proofing still intact, i've lost 160 so far. changed my goal to 300, assuming i actually swap out my seats. when i'm thinking of how the lost weight affects my performance, i'm reminded of a chart on howstuffworks that showed a variety of cars, their hp, and their weight, and then a hp:weight ratio. i keep calculating my ratio, and am wondering, in terms of straight line performance (obviously weight reduction also helps in braking distance, gas mileage, cornering, etc.) is losing weight comparable (relatively) to gaining hp? for example, if i was at 3100lb, 165 hp, would losing 200lb affect straight line performance the same as gaining 10.6 hp, as either change would result in the same hp:weight ratio?

Hmm, I should try to pull some of my shit out then too. No money for lighter replacements now though =(

Re: 5th gen accord weight
jajimo - i have not spent a penny on the 160 lbs. (though a good part was swapping my sub box w/ another i had, and taking some excessive shit out of my car that isn't part of a stock accord, like unwired stereo equip, mad tools, etc.) but even off a stock accord you should be able to go out to your driveway and come back in w/ 100lb of shit. go to my cardomain page i'll post what i've taken out, i think you'll be able to get a lot of it off yours. i'll post in a few

Re: 5th gen accord weight
the sound deadening tar in the car, for all of it, weighs about 25 lbs, and then the first two layers of the firewall mat (you should leave the last for safety, and to pass tech at the strip).....about 12 more lbs.

Re: 5th gen accord weight
ya i heard that somewhere else, but i spend a lot of time in my car, so sound proofing's gotta stay, along w/ full interior, ac, stereo, etc. i took out the spare because i do the majority of my driving withing 10 min of my apt., but will be taking it on longer trips

Re: 5th gen accord weight
the sound proofing stuff, it doesn't have any effect when removed. The only thing I ever noticed, was a tiny bit of increase in the sound that gravel makes when it hits the undercarriage. But really, it doesn't do a @#$@ bit of nothing. .......I'm not even sure why honda wasted their time putting it there in the first place. Perhaps for minor noise reduction and perhaps for corrosion protection ?
I actually replaced mine later on with dynomat, which was actually a lb or two lighter overall after all was said and done, for actually more coverage. - Nathan |

Re: 5th gen accord weight
i've heard from other people that it makes a big difference. not calling you a liar, did you leave the carpet on? maybe that's the difference. i know people on accordingly done who've done it and don't recommend it for a daily driver. plus that's only 15 pounds anyways, and the time it would take to remove all that shit could hardly be worth it (unless you're going all out and got time to kill. i know just getting the dynamat out of the trunk was a pain in the ass
