getting a SR20DE to become +(T)

hi , i have a 2002 g20, and i was wondering what parts would i need to get it turboed. basically, my friend has sr20det with a piston broken and the rings, i was wondering what parts can i salvage out of it and what new parts i need to get my car turboed. thanks.

If i were you i'd tear down the DET and make sure it's not totally trashed. If you had chunks of piston/ring/etc flying around in there it could have easily damaged the turbo. If the engine simply broke a ring and still has good internals, it might be worth saving.

If the turbo parts are good, you have two choices. You could either rebuild the DET engine or you could swap all the DET pieces over to your DE engine. The turbo will basically bolt on, and you can put the oil squirters from the DET into the DE. Either way, you'll probably want to get a front mount intercooler unless you want to cut up your cars hood.

There's an article in the Dec 2001 issue of SCC on doing a DET swap. That should give you a lot of the info you'll need. And there are several guys on here who've done the DET swap or who have turboed their SR20DE's. I'm sure at least a few of them will chime in with some answers for you.

Go to the FAQ section of this forum and you will find a ton of info on both the DET swap and what parts you would want to take off and bolt onto a DE.

The one problem right now for people with a 2000+ G20 and turbo is a ECU. Unless you want to re pin your G20 wiring harness to fit a JWT ECU with the Sentra turbo program or swap wirring harnesses all together. Personaly I would wait for JWT to just come out with a ECU for 2000+ SR20DE's with the roller rocker setup.

If you have a 99 you will also have to change some wires, but not as many as the 2000+ ECU's.

On the 2000+ the connecters are totally different than the 99 and lower. You will have to rewire 54 out of 116 wires on the connectors.


Personally I'm going to rewire them. Not hard, just time consuming but hey ...do you want to go fast? or do you want to suck?


You will also have to switch your O2 sensor, TPS, and IAC valve. No big deal.


Also... I really wouldnt wait and pray for a 2000+ ECU upgrade. From what I've heard JWT hasnt been able to make much progress at all. They still cannot read any of the 2000+ ECU data which is now encrypted. Previously it was not.

You can probably fit any intercooler size you want. However using a huge intercooler unnecessarily will lead to increased lag in your setup.

I'm trying to sort something out with it.

The problem I see is that our 2000+ cars have the infiniti immobilizer system which works with the ECU to start the car if the correct frequency is transmitted from the key.

I'm working with a B15 owner right now to sort out the wiring because of that. The B15's appear to use a different pin for the "start signal". I'm not sure if we can just swap that one pin or if we have to remove the whole immobilizer system and key cylinder and replace it w/ a 99 spec... (pain!! new keys!!!)


This may not be an issue at all but we just want to be sure before giving out wrong info. If someone has a 2000+ FSM that would really help me!! I have a layout of the pins for the ECU connectors, but I dont have a list as to which pin does what.


(btw.. I may also be able to have conversion adapters made so we dont have to splice wires... but I need some spare connectors for a 99 or newer harness)

Correction.. I just thought of something... you will have to rewire EVERY wire on the 2000+ models.

I forgot you need to use the 99 or newer connectors, so besides moving 54 wires around you will also have to rewire the unchanged pins to the new connectors...

The DET ECU would only help if you had a full DET setup (engine, harness, ecu, maf)


About the rewiring info... The more I go over it, the more I think its incorrect.

First off the 2000+ ECU's have 111 wires to them. (1-95 and 101-116). Now what the "instructions" tell you to do is...

1) Get a B14 harness and remove the connectors.
2) Remove 54 wires from your ECU connector and put them in certain pins on the B14 connector.

My question is.... what happens to the 57 other wires that are still in my stock connector???

Something seems odd here. I have to chat with the source.

man, all of these troubles just to T your SR20DE? I want lots of power too but it looks like there is a significant mod here to turbo your SR20DE. Would the SR20VE and ECU and harness have similar difficulties?

If you can get a complete setup you shouldnt have problems.


The rewiring really isnt a big deal. I just need to sort out exactly what needs to be done. It has only been done once on a 2000+ car. The JWT/Nissan SEMA show car (sentra B15).


It all comes down to whether you want to go fast or you want to suck?


Whatever work needs to be done, will get done...

Btw you only need to do this if you want to use a JWT ECU. If you want to use a piggyback system you can, but on the setup I'm going with I dont want to do that.

Well, it is certainly to me that the JWT ECU is the best one for the G20 in the aftermarket, it also presents problems with harness rewiring. Surely enough, JWT hasn't yet debugged the problem with the newer 2000+ ECU to make life easy for all T-wanna be's. The other option is to get a SR20VE and turbo it, assuming aftermarket supports this product. The question then becomes will the SR20VE encounter similar problems if one decides to go with the JWT ECU? Does JWT ECU support SR20VE in other words.
