Extended warranties are better to be purchased from a dealership because then you know you have a place to go to that will be there for you and your warranty instead of having to try and fight with a smaller chain should any problems arise.
Most places will not offer an extended warranty on a vehicle that is older then 7 year previous to the current one (so right now nothing older then a 1997 model) or with more then 150,000km or so. The km and age thing will vary depending on what's available to you. I'm assuming you have a Ford truck by the way? Warranties cost start around 1000 bucks give or take a couple hundred bucks and go up from there based on how inclusive you want the warranty to be. For example, if you drive a brand new '04 F150 with less then 1000km on it and you want to extend the factory powertrain warranty for a year, that's gonna be alot cheaper then if you have a 1998 Ford F150 with 120,000kms on it and you want a full powertrain/comprehensive bumper to bumper warranty for the next 30,000kms. Hopefully this demonstrates what i'm getting at? My personal experience is with Tricare/Tricore aftermarket warrantys available through the Ford dealership that i sold at. If this isn't detailed enough or you still have questions, post a reply and i'll try and help more.

Re: Extended Warranty?
Extended warrenty is kinds like kissing your sister, what good are they? I have never purchased a extended warrenty and so far {knock on wood} I have never had a problem with any one of my cars or trucks I have had. Keep in mind I'm over 30 and I have had plenty!

Some people like the piece of mind of a warranty, some don't care. Personally, if i was financing a car over 5 years and the origianal warranty would expire in the next 3, i'd purchase warranty to cover my butt.
It's bad enough having to make a car payment without having to fork out extra cash to pay for unreasonable technical difficulties.
