1998 K1500 brake problem

Have 1998 K1500 pickup with intermittent brake problem. Brakes hang up occassionally. When replacing pads and rotors, could not push back piston w/o loosening line and relieving pressure. Never run into this before. Is it in antilock system, master cylinder, or what. Piston moves freely and easily when line cracked. Ideas? Thanks

I have never had a caliper hang up like you are saying, However you should NEVER compress the caliper on a vehicle with antilock brakes without opening the bleeder. I did it several times before I found out you are not supposed to and never had a problem, But was told it can ruin the anti lock system and the part is around $1,000. The reson is is because when you use your brakes the fluid in the calipers gets hot and eventually starts to break down and become contaminated. When this fluid is compressed back in the system it contamiates it and ruins something. I was also told the anti locks have a one way valve that can be ruined. I have never had a problem and am only relaying what I was told.

I have a 96 Z71 and changed my brakes a few weeks ago and did just what you said not too - compress the calipers without opening a valve. What happened was the fluid was pushed back out of the cover on my master cylander.

I hope my breaks are not ruined. I notice they pull to the left when I stop.

The flex hoses that runs between the calipers and the metal brake lines
is probably swelled internally. The brakes on my 95 silverado would
hang, so I changed the calipers. I still did it. It turned out to be the
flex hoses. They are about $15.00 each at Autozone. Good luck.
