Re: engine cutting out

You have to have the error code read before you start doing anything. The speeds are electronicaly controlled. It could be a faulty fuel pump or any component with the air fuel mix

Re: engine cutting out

the check engine light doesn't come on until the ECM is in "limp-home" mode.

Check your ECM codes:
http://www.allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.html

I know it says 80's, but the newer ones are linked there too...and they're not much different.

You may just need a tune up, or the EGR valve is bad. Hard to tell for sure without the codes.

Re: engine cutting out

55 is normal.

Probably a good tune up and injector cleaning will fix it, or your ignition wires/distributor cap and rotor is/ are bad.
They're cheap enough, just replace them with the tune-up.
If you don't want to spend $ on injector cleaning, then buy a good bottle of cleaner (in the tank) and run a tank of premium through it and see if that helps.
