Question about air filter?

I just bought a K&N air filter (just the filter that slides in to the stock box) claiming to increase air flow? How much of a difference does this make, if any? Also, does anyone have experience with cutting a hole into the stock airbox? I read somewhere that by doing this you can get about 7+ hp, and that it is more effective than buying a K&N air intake kit. If you have done this, does it give you noticeable results, and does it increase your gas mileage. I live in NYC and the gas is killing me, so anything I can do to improve this would help. Any other inexpensive tips for hp/gas mileage improvement would be appreciated.

Scroll down the following page and see the sections under "Air induction" and "Fuel Delivery" among others.

If I just want to remove the elbow to create a little more power (7hp or so) I won't have to modify anything else, will I? I don't think that's enough of a change to have to change the fuel delivery. What other ways can I do any cheap mods, if you have any suggestions? Also, if I put headers and an exhaust, I have to do any other mods, for instance, the ECU?

K&N filter adds airflow but dont expect much of an increase in power.Headers add power 15-20hp.Cams add power hp varies on which kind.balanced and ported intakes add about 8-10 hp.Airfilters dont add that much by themselves but headers will take advantage of more airflow.Cheap upgrades that actually add power not noise, are few and far between. save your pennies and get headers and 2 1/2 exhaust you will stoked not cheap though.Unless you have a 4cyl. then you should just give up

91' runner v6 downey headers and full exhaust,downey aircleaner,flex a lite elec fan,centerforce clutch,jet chip,4" lift w/ 32 at.....etc.

Don't expect 7 HP from removing the elbow (unless you have a supercharger). Gadget got that much power with a supercharger, modified fuel delivery and other mods. You won't get that much with a stock intake system.

No, you won't have to modify anything else if you increase air flow into the air filter.

He also shows a mod for cutting out the front of the air box. That seems to add a similar amount of power as removing the elbow.

What I meant by cheap was $200 to $300 per mod, the max $500. I just want to get the car a little above 200hp without getting the supercharger (I will end up spending thousands because you have to modify a whole bunch of other sh-t). I want bolt on things that are fairly simple that don't get too complicated like mods to the ECU, fuel delivery etc.

I have a 98 4runner SR5 V6 4WD (3.4L). I am considering bolt ons, like you said, the headers and exhaust. I just don't want to add anything that would cause me to modify my fuel delivery/ECU yet. I use my car to drive to work and I can't afford to leave in in a shop more than a day. Gadget had to tweek a lot of stuff to get his 4Runner to run right. Maybe after I do the simple things first, I might consider the other stuff if I feel I want more power. Any idea how much the port and polish would run and how much increasing the throttle body would give you in terms of hp?

Talking

Downey offers a ported and balanced manifold for $454. and then you would need to install it or get it installed.Downey says it adds 8hp at 4000rpm moving your normal power peak from 3600...so you would be shifting at 4000 instead of 3600 w/ a 8 hp gain.Seems like everything is expensive huh? downeys #1 562 949 9494 give them a call get a catalog. It is kinda like an instruction manual. Changing your ecm would take 2 or 3 days and i would not do that untill you are done w/ all your other mods because it would cost another $399 to reprogram it.When i did mine(ecm) i passed smog just barely which would mean i am tuned to the highest performance w/ out being illegal. peace

Re: Question about air filter?

How good are the downey headers, and how do they compare to the trd and edelbrock headers? The downey headers are very economical and I wanted to know if there is a significant difference in performance to spend the extra $. Thanks.

Brian gave me a link for gadgets website. I read up on jet chip mod that he did. He said that he didn't get any results from the jet chip. What results did you get from the chip, and the headers also? Could it be that the jet chip doesn't work for the 3rd generation runners?

Re: Question about air filter?

agian i dont know about the 3rd gen stuff but after i did my headers, exhaust and aircleaner my truck was lacking in low end and after i got the chip done it was gone, no more lag.And jet chip doesnt say they can make your car fly but it can adjust the amount of gas coming to your engine,it's my understanding that it lengthens the spurts of gas coming out of your injectors which would take advantage of headers and such.As i stated before i passed smog just barely, which means its as tweeked as much as it can be.Before when i smogged it it passed easily way below standard.Seems like proof to me
