Question 92 Bonnieville Security Sys Problem

I have a 92 Bonnieville SSE. I drove the car yesterday about 150 miles. Parked it, turned it off and went inside. When I returned to start the car, I put the key in the ignition and turned it, the steering unlocked and a security light began blinking. It would not turn over or start. I got nothing. Anyone know what is going on. I am not real car smart. I however have always kept it in tip-top shape. There are no known mechanical problems. Could this be the ignition? I don't have any special security system on the car. HELP....HELP, I am stranded at my mothers.

Re: 92 Bonnieville Security Sys Problem

I have a 92 SSEI. There is a little black chip on your ignition key that sends a signal to a reader inside your ignition lock cyl where you put the key. That chip has a code that only allows the vehicle to start with that key. It is called a VATS key. It is part of the VATS system (VEHICLE ANTI- THEFT SYSTEM). If that security light is blinking you need to get a replacment key from a dealer because that chip is defective. When the light blinks you are locked out from starting your car for about 10 mins. Hope this helps

Re: 92 Bonnieville Security Sys Problem

ok I bet you have gotton the problem fixed already but if a new key does not work then I am about 95% sure that it is the Ignition Lock Cylinder, which goes for about 45 bucks ish, they made real cheap wires that break easily on the lock cylinder but yea. Try to replace that if you havent already and hope it works!
