1990 LeSabre with possible fuel problem...

I need some help fixing my grandmothers LeSabre...

Sometimes when I start the car it starts fine then about 10 seconds later it will start to sputter and stall. Other times it will sputter right away and usually stall. Sometimes it will sputter and then go back to normal idle. If I mash the gas pedal sometimes it will keep it from stalling but I still hear it sputtering. I took the car for a ride and sometimes I can drive for a minute or 2 and it's running totally normal then all the sudden it will lose power and sputter. I checked the oil and the belts and they look ok. I was thinking it was a fuel delivery problem. Possibly bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or clogged injectors? It's weird how it will run normal and then sputter then go back to normal again.

Any pointers are appreciated.

Could water be in the gas? Try putting in some some dry-gas. If the car isn't used on a regular basis, or extreme cold conditions can cause condensation can collect in the gas tank.

It is driven a minimum of once a week. I put in some fuel injector cleaner and it ran pretty good that day but the next day it went back to what it was. It's going into a mechanic tomorrow. Thanks for the reply

Same problem

I have the same car, and am having very similar problems. I tried replacing the plugs and wires hoping it was an igniton problem with no luck. Please let me know what the mechanic you bring it to says.

Re: 1990 LeSabre with possible fuel problem...

Well, the mechanic secretary lady called today and said "It was the cars computer, something internally. The charge is $250.00." I didn't get to question much because I was driving at the time but I am sure as hell going to ask for a breakdown tomorrow when I pick it up. I highly doubt they swapped ECU's or anything. I bet they changed my plugs and made up a bs story. This garage has been around for 20+ years so I have slight trust for them. Comments?

He he he he he. They BS'd you. Ever heard of an ignition coil? they go bad periodically. cause vibrations, rough/unstable motor idle. The age of a garage says nothing about the honesty of an owner. He might get his money cheaping people out.

prob gettin a bad ground between your ingnition coils and engine block. clean all mounting plates of the coils because the coils ground thru the engine.
