20b

OK, how does one get ahold of one of these 20b engines, and what makes it better than just upgrading your turbo or something else w/ the money?

Well the 20B was only produced for the Japanese market Cosmo so you can only get them from Japanese junkyards and have them imported here. You can also make one, but that's pretty involved (custom eccentric shaft and whatnot). They're so coveted due to their rarity, added torque, and higher potential. It's kinda like swapping in a V8 in place of a V6 sorta. They're not necessarily better to upgrade as they require a LOT of modificatons to the car and end up costing in the neighborhood of $36,000 on top of the price of the car itself. Got to www.petitracing.com and check out the Banzai or to www.pfsupercars.com as Peter Farrell has done a few too. Cam at Pettit has been doing the conversions for years and is probably the foremost authority on them in the US. Most guys opt for the single turbo though as it's far less expensive and involved and puts out more than enough power for the street. A properly done single turbo conversion can run upwards of $10,000, but it's a lot less than the 20B conversion.

You might also want to check out Atkins Rotary or Mazdatrix I think either of them have/will build one for you.

if any one really wants one of these engines for far less than $36,000 and is really serious about it then e-mail me at [email protected] and i'll get you an engine. there is a place about 6 miles from my house here outside of tokyo called showa that has high-pro engines out the ass. red top honda, sr-20, vg-30, rb-26 dett and of course f-c3. if anyone is SERIOUSLY interested e-mail me with a telephone number so i can call you.

i wouldn't buy one from this guy in japan, i'm not saying he can't get one but try to find one in cali, the freight costs is way too high, my store did this a few times and after the freight charges and customs fees, we were better off importing an entire car, or buying a new one

I'll answer your actual questions:

1. Think about it. The 20B increases displacement by 50% by adding a third 650cc rotor. With stock FD3 twin turbos, an APEXi Power FC ECU, proper exhaust and fuel system improvements you can earily get north of 600HP very quickly once you tune it on a dyno (plan on a Fluiddyne radiator and a new IC to keep it cool plus other bits to keep it reliable). Easiest implementation is in a FC chassis although you can cram a blown 20B into a FD chassis if you move the IC up front and move the battery, make other engine bay mods, etc. In my neighborhood there is a 20B FC in Seattle that 600hp without even trying hard and a FD in Portland with a single Garret TS04 turbocharger in Portland that's 800hp before Nitrous (he a bunch of additional mods to handle the power).

2. See http://www.corksport.com (Portland, Oregon). They have a 20B in stock right now for $3999.

I personally would opt to rebuild one balanced and treated using 3mm ceramic rotor tips for reliability and higher redline.

Oh..if you've never heard one a 20B has a very unique exhaust pulse that sounds totally awesome.

Just build a 4rotor (talk about torque!), stretch the frame and BAM!

I have a option2 that shows a fd tuner doing just that! It looks wicked!

Ceramic seals on a 20b would be a waste of time. the eccentric shaft is a two piece design and has horrible problems revving above 8500. To fix this, you need a custom machined eccentric shaft ($4500 USD from a dude in New Zealand is the only place that makes them), and upgraded journal bearings (and additional journal bearings). ceramic seals do not last very long at all and are over $1200 for a set for a 2rotor. The also live in the 10k+ rpm area..... not worth it.

stock 2mm 3 piece mazda seals is the way to go. they last the longest and hold the highest compression. THats what I used in my 20b rebuild. I'm adding a single turbo and going for 700rwhp.

Cool

My friend bought a 3 rotar 20b the only problem was that he couldnt find any good parts for it, for instance he wants to put a T51R turbo in it but he cannot because you need a turbo manifold for it thats made by HKS for the 13b. So now hes left with only the option of gettin one custom made for AT LEAST $8000!! For more questions IM on AOL Rx7forum. He works for www.rx7store.net which basically is the best store for Rx7s. Most questions can be answered by him, hes very useful. Another place to ask questions and learn more about Fds is www.rx7forum.com. Have fun

$8000??!?!?!?! That is absurd!!! You can purchase the V-band flange for the T51 series and make your own... the flange is about $125. An exhaust manifold flange from www.k2rd.com (stainless steel) is $99. Miscellaneous exhaust runners will run about 150-200. There is less than $500 in parts there. I had a friend make my single turbo exhaust manifold for my 20B, but he typically sells them for $800. Which is a very good price for a SS304 manifold, 2rotor or 3rotor...
