1995 cutlass not starting

My cutlass just broke the 100,000 mark and everything was fine, but one morning I went to start it and the starter wouldn't kick over. As it turns out my alt. was bad so I bought another and the car still won't start on its own. At first all the lights on my dash weren't coming on, but when I changed the alt. and charged the batt. the '' low oil'' light and the little geenie looking light came back on. The only thing now is the starter is not kicking over so how or what can I do to fix this problem?

Re: 1995 cutlass not starting

How long did you charge the battery?
If the battery was completely drained, it would take at least 3 hours to fully charge the battery using 10 Amp charger.

Trace the positive battery cable from the battery terminal to the remote positive terminal post. The remote positive terminal post is usually located on the driver side location which is near the fuel pump relay/fuse. The remote positive terminal post has a stud thread and uses a nut to keep positive cables tight. Check that area and make sure that the nut is tight.

Check the positive cables and negative cables and make sure that the conector on both ends are tight.

Try starting the vehicle and see if it works this time.

If not, you might want to try is turn on the head lights. The head lights should be bright and if not then something is wrong with the electrical system. If the head lights is bright then turn it off. Turn the ignition switch to RUN and put the transmission in NEUTRAL and (set the emergency brake) try starting the engine.

If that does not work, (set the emergency brake) and try to manually bypass the starter and directly feed or connect it to the battery positive terminal to see if the starter even turns over.

This is a shot in the dark, but try a different key. On my 95 cutlass supreme, I too had the same problem. In my case I found that the little security resistor in the key had worn down and was not making contact. I tried my spare key and it started just fine.
