Changing of air filter?

I have a 1999 Lumina V6 3100. I was wondering where can I find my air filter on my car? How should I know when to change my filter? How often should it be changed on a car like this? How much does an air filter cost?

Easy, about 12K miles, and depends.

AC Delco will run about 8 bucks, purolator will run about twelve, and K&N will run about forty five or so.

The filter is right next to the battery/windshield washer tank. As you're looking under the hood, front right. There's a big black rectangle box, four screws hold it together. You'll probably find it easier to take the hose off too. If you see lots of black stuff on the filter, definitely change it. Around 12,000 is a good idea to change it, unless you live in dusty conditions.

Just be sure to get the filter BEFORE you remove your current one. A good idea is to never run your car without it. Unless you're just dying to get every last horse out of the limited 3.1L anyhow.

I put a K&N in my 2001 lumina 3100 V6, and the son of a bitch really hauls serious ass. Burns them like nothing. The K&N only costed 35.00 at my local bumper to bumper. Go with the K&N. They are more expensive, but you can wash them out, let them dry, and put them right back in. Also gives me about 2 more miles to the gallon. Good Luck.

I grabbed a K&N from (insert auto shop) and it was about $45. Pretty decent, I've noticed quite an improvement in throttle response. Pretty good for the money.

I just thought I'd throw in that My 2001 lumina "family sedan" just wasted a little mercury cougar sports car. I mean I whomped all over that thing. That stupid kid never knew what hit him. Just to put a little meaning as to what the K&N actually really does. I also just have a 3.1 V6. Nothing special except the K&N.

I agree, K&N is excellent, but you won't get maximum air flow from a rectangular filter. My recommendation is a cone shaped K&N filter. Even with the 3.1L it's difficult to run cold air outside of the engine compartment, so I removed the intake box and installed a K&N cone directly on the inlet of the mass airflow sensor. It fits nicely and my airflow has nearly no restriction. V-6 MUSTANGS AIN'T GOT SHIT ON ME!!!

I think its hilarius that a V6 mustang with relatively the same size engine, being a sports car, cant even keep up with a family sized lumina, and also a mercury cougar for that matter. Just goes to show you that chevy's are better quality.

I have a 95 Lumina and a 99 Cougar. It's true that the Lumina will give the Cougar a run for it's money. On a straight road. The extra weight is more than made up for by the extra 0.6L over the Ford engine, but Luminas handle like a big bag full of Jello. Cougars aren't sports cars; they're just a Contour with a nice body design and stiffer suspension. Much more fun to drive though.

Fords and GMs seem to be both poor quality to me. I'm buying a Nissan next time.

ya, that '95 lumina of yours will fly right by that nissan like its satnding still. I heard it best from my trusted mechanic, "Toyotas, and Nissans are good cars, long lasting engines, but not very quick" Unless of course its a cilica, skyline, etc....
