clicking noise when turning right

Hey all,

Anyone have any ideas what would cause a slight click when turning right? It's a single noise that happens....every so often it may occur 2 times if I continue turning and have to crank the wheel a little more. It especially happens when it's warm out in instances like when I'm slowing (almost to a stop) to make a right turn. Doesn't do it when I turn left.

something else to add...the car will also make a slight click only when slowing down even when not turning. Upon accelerating slightly after slowing, it will click again. Almost like it's poping from one position to another somewhere in the steering/suspension.

That is definately your suspension. Might have to change the bearings.

Most likely need to have your suspension bushings lubricated. A good tire/alignment/suspension shop should be able to diagnose this.

I've not been able to isolate this in a shop on mine. I've been told everything from control arm bushings to just rust/dirt/crud on the strut housing catching to my steering rack going bad (wtf?!). Intersting enough no one thinks my bearing are bad- no whirring noise on turning, ect.

What does it do it you get on and off the gas? Sort of like trying to bounce the front end while driving. Have you been able to look at the front suspension while the car is suspended on a lift or jack stands? When this occurs do you feel any sort of vehicle movement or vibration in relation to the click. Can you feel it through the wheel or brake pedal. A loose or broken caliper mount bolt will allow the brake caliper to slightly shift during braking or turns and it will click. Look at the CV joints too, torn boots or grease spatter in the wheel well. Bad joints will click especially during a turn, it is more of a repetative clicking when it is real bad.

Last night when I was driving I tried some different things to see if I could explain the issue better. The problem can occur with just a tad bit or more extensive turning of steering to right. When I'm creeping to a stop it clicks a little in the steering wheel and then clicks again on slight acceleration..just when I start out. It's not a repetitive click at all. I've jacked my car up and looked a little. I tried a few times when slightly turning left and it did not happen. The anti-sway bar and bushings look a bit warn and I'll likely replace them when I put on my new struts soon. When I have one side jacked up, I can rotate that tire about 5 degrees back and fourth hearing the tranmission insides move and see the tie rod to the other wheel rotate a tad before stopping. That all seemed fairly normal to me. I havent looked at the brakes yet, but am about to have my rotors turned and put on new pads so I'll check it out then.

What should I look for with control arm bushings? Where exactly? Thanks..

There was a technical bulletin issued May, 1996 for the '95 and '96 models (# 63-33-01). Don't know what year your vehicle is...

Subject: Popping noise from front of vehicle when turning.

Condition: Some owners may comment on a popping noise from the front of the vehicle when turining the steering sheel with the vehicle sitting still or during a parking maneuver.

Cause: This condition may be due to jounce bumper contacting / rubbing on the strut rod.

Correction: Install improved jounce bumper and bushing in front strut following the approved service procedure in section 3C of the service manual.
