Question $1200 for a rebuilt motor....

I own a stock 1995 mits eclipse GS, and just recently a rod has started knocking. I found a guy who said he will rebuild it for $1200 with a 12 month/30,000 mi warranty. I know this sounds incredibly good, but does it sound to good to be true? What do you guys think?

Re: $1200 for a rebuilt motor....

Sounds about right considering you could pull one from a junkyard with no warranty for 500ish.

not a 420a, cheapest i've found was $800 on the internet, not including shipping, locally they run for $1300 and up.

420a motors are only in the '95 and '96 non-turbo eclipse', which are made by chrysler, right?

Re: $1200 for a rebuilt motor....

Well i'm new to the whole eclipse thing but this is what i do know. I know that the 420a is a 2nd Gen motor, although the 420a in the 2nd Gen eclipse' do have 2.0 engines, the 1st Gen also have a 2.0. They look totally different however. For instance, the mechanic that i brought my car too, to get it fixed specializes on the eclipse. He showed me 3 or 4 1st Gen motors in his shop. The 1st Gen 2.0 says 2.0 DOHC in red writing on top of the motor....Does yours?

Re: $1200 for a rebuilt motor....

1st Gen motors are the 4g63 for non-turbo and 4g63t for turbo(best way i can explain it). Basically the same motor, ones turbocharged, the other isn't. 2nd gen motors are 420a for non-turbo, 4g64 for non-turbo spyders, and 4g63 for turboed

I don't mean to confuse you even further, 1stGenRocks, but apparantly there was a third engine that was placed in 1st gen eclipses. Here's how the engine placement went for that.

Base - 1.8l
GS - 1.8l
GS 16valve - 2.0 non turbo
GS Turbo - 2.0 turbo
GSX - 2.0 turbo

the 2.0 turbo and 2.0 non turbo are the same basic engine, which is the 4g63, but there was also this 1.8l in the mix.

This was provided by MSN autos. Sorry bout that, Your engine isn't a 4g63 after all.
