Toyota Echo 2000 O2 Sensor - Check Engine light

Hello everyone!

I am looking for help/advice on what I should do or if I have been given the correct advice regarding my 2000 Toyota Echo. This is the 1st foreign car I have owned, let alone a Toyota and I'm already having problems.

A few weeks ago my check engine light on my Echo. I saw no problems with the way the car was running and didn't have the extra money to get it looked at so I decided to wait. I thought bringing it to Pep Boys here in Connecticut would be cheaper than the dealer. I guess I wasn't expecting them to quote me such an outrageous price. I decided to take their quote and try and get a 2nd opinion. I may be just over reacting but hope it's not true, if so I will deal with paying. UGH! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My car has 49,258 miles. This is what Pep Boys said I need to do and the cost:

Complete Fuel System Cleaning - $139.99
R & R Sensor, Oxygen Rear - $82.00
R & R Sensor, Air Flow - $41.00
Upstream O2 Sensor - $224.50

With labor they are telling me it's gonna be $600.00+

Does this seem right? Do I need to get all this at once? Would my warranty cover any of this? Please help if you can.

I hope you haven't gone to Pep Boys yet. There is a very cheap and simple solution that took care of the problem for me. I have a 2000 Toyota Echo 2-door and the check the engine light came on.

it's much easier to just remove the EFI fuse for ten seconds and it resets it's. This is caused by a very small variation in the in gas line pressure tripped due to temp., gas tank level, driving style I know it sounds crazy but any two of those happening at the same time sets it off it's basically an air bubble that ist the culprit there's nothing you can really do about it the fuse is the simplest way to fix this pop the hood remove your fuse box cover and remove the 15 amp fuse marked EFI for 15-30 seconds

Another stupid post suggesting removing a fuse!!! What the shit!

For anyone else, take your car to an independant, and have them back probe the connectors of the O2 sensor. Its very possible the sensors are bad or the connectors are dirty. 02 Sensors can be expensive, and thats about right, though I sincerly wonder why they are going to clean out the fuel system. Tell them to go pound sand on the system clean, because unless your really using some shitty or contaminated gas, its useless.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU ! I just purchased a used 2000 Echo and the check engine light came on and I freaked. My husband found your post and it worked like a charm. I'm so relieved nothing was wrong with my car and it didn't cost anymoney. Anyway I appreciate your quick fix explaination.

Check your OM. I think your 5yr/60000mi warranty should cover this. An O2 sensor is uncommon at this milieage. The fuel system cleaning is a screw job period.
I have found that in many cases the dealer is a cheaper long term solution, they usually fix it for more $$ but they get it right the first time.
