*updated* with race

hi guys, silly question here, how much is 102 kw in horse power cause i reall don't know how to tell it

or maybe you guys know wy in europe (belgium actually) they put kw instead of hp on their charts?

ps: i'm a newcomer (sort of) but i love cars, the problem is i dont know anything (maybe a little bit) of my bmw (the engine) that i bought from my dad. Its a bmw 318i sedan version but with m style and sportspacket for interior and exterior. My dad says it must be around 150 hp, could that be correct?

Thanks in advance , c ya

Re: how much hp is....

Manufacturers list the engine power at the flywheel as a rule.
Wheel HP is significantly less.

i see, should've remembered that from this forum cause i'm browsing it almost for half a year to a year now.

Thks for the feedback.

Had already one race with the car (couple against one car) against an integra type r of my friend and neighbour. It's a car whos previous owner riced it out a little bit, but it still has 220 hp, so if i'm not wrong that's 30 to 40 more then stock wright?
LOl, i knew i was going too lose but i still wanted to race the car were i was a pasenger in for more then 4 months . And drooled on it (even dreamt of it) for 4 months, hehe.

The first drag was from a roll of let us say 50 to 60 km/H.
He instantly took a car lenght on the moment where i just released the clutch when i wanted to switch the gear, lol, i was too slow but that was from the excitement. Then he just drove away from me like i was standing still.
Second race was much more equal (i'll explain, i'll explain).
We get to a light on a 2 way (each side) road on an intersection with lots of people waiting for the lights to turn green just like us, so we had a lot of 'visitors' to see our race. I practiced my launch so i knew ( hoped actually) that i (rwd) would get him (fwd) from the line.
I did by maybe a frontweel lenght on him, hehe. Through first gear he pulled even, i switched to second while he lets his vtec kick in, we stay even until he switched to second, then he started to pul away from me but not so fast as the first run because i really was paying attention now at my rpms and gears.

Loved both races, his car really has a nice racing sound that overwhelms my sound of the bmw that is much more quiet, even when i'm 7 cars behind i feel his sound through all my car, lol, amazing !

i love my car even if its not so fast just love the setup and the feeling it gives to me of freedom combined with the thing im obsessed with from my 12 yrs, racing

hope y enjoyed and till next time

sorry but i needed to ad something, i actually almost took him on our top speeds(on the second race we were on a very long strip with one very light turn to the right). When i was at 216km/H i surprisingly saw that i was coming back again (but he was still the winner).
I asked him what had happened but he said it was just the fact that his rear wing was set to a reasonable high stand (high on the downforce, not high high, lol) and so his fifth gear didnt pul that hard, so he switches back to his 4 and stayed in that with his rpm at about 9000.
So if the strip would have been a little bit longer i would have won from an integra with 82 more hp. That would have been cool now would it, hehe

I don't think the factor is hard to remember -

0.74 kW = 1 HP

kW is standard for over 20 years now - people just can't let go old systems.

(see usa/uk - why do you still use those odd units like feet, pounds, toes, ounces whatev )

ok ok

things that confuse me are, e.g. "ft.lbs."
I can imagine Nm, but not ft.lbs.

I think the factor is 1 Nm = 1.35 ft.lbs.

same for square feet or cubic inches -

but didn intend to appear ignorant

tx for the replys guys,
now could it just be that the integra who's basically stock loses a lot of his power in fifth gear due to aerodynamic problems or that he just doesnt get much faster then 205 km/u (127.3 mp/h) when he's almost fully stock?

He's got the same problem as I do, I'm horsepower limited for my top speed. The car has the aerodynamics to do unheard of speeds that I'll never reach but my tired stock motor won't pull me past 115mph... well it would but very slowwwlly.

Which is fine by me actually, I don't go that fast that often. Just every once in a while I like to kick it up a notch when the highway is empty.

"I don't go fast often" - in connection with that, I often hear that stock motors don't produce their estimated power/speed.

I don't really know how to describe that in english, it's said that a motor only keeps it's performance when it's pushed to the limit from time to time.

My father bought a Audi convertible from a guy who only drove carefully and very slow. My father reached about 130mph at first when he got it, now after a year or so he's driving it almost daily in spring/summer and hits 150mph.

any other experiences with that?

Well, you gotta remember my car is 32 years old... Plus it's got the crappy econo E88 head. It doesn't flow for shit, and gives me low compression. All that adds up to sluggish 240z. It runs fine, can average 22mpg @ 75-80mph. Not bad for an old school carb'd 6 cylinder.
