Just want it to work....

On the way home from the meet, about 3 hours from home, my car starts makin this really wierd noise. It sounds like a knocking, but not really....how can I explain this. Lets say that there was something on my axel, and every time it rotates, it slams against the inner fender wall or something, kinda like that. It stays pretty consistant with my speed, i.e goes faster when I go faster and slows down when I slow down, but I cant figure out what it is. Its not too horribly loud, but I can definetely hear it. When I turn my wheel slightly to the left, it gets quieter and seems to go away, but straight and right, its there...Ive checked all my mounts, theyre fine. My axels are okay, theres nothing in my tires, I'm stumped. I have to drive to Seattle on tuesday, which is 200 miles away, so I dont wanna get stuck, anyone got any ideas on is wrong with my car???

I can think of two possible things. One would be your wheel bearing. The other could be one of your ball joints - though I don't think they would cause the sound you described.

To check the wheel bearing; jack the car up high enough that the wheel (where the sound is coming from) is off the ground. Do not loosen the lug nuts before jacking the car up for this little test. Once the wheel is up off the ground, grab it at the top & bottom (think of it as a clock face & grab at 12-o'clock & 6-o'clock) & wiggle it forward & back (not rotating left & right like you would a steering wheel). If your bearing is shot you'll be able to feel the wheel move back & forth slightly.

Honda bearings aren't known to fail often, but if you (or anyone else) beat the shit out of the car on a constant basis it could happen quite easily.

If it was a ball-joint you could probably get the same results except the whole spindle arm would move - not the wheel.

Last but not least, check your lugnuts. Mine came loose once & sounded exactly like what you described. Luckily I caught it before the wheel came completely off the car!

Yeah I know my wheel bearing is shot, is has some movement in the tire/wheel assembley. Ive known that for a few weeks. Just havent had time/money to do anything about it. However, it hasnt ever made this noise before. My boots are fine, and the discs are fine also, Ive had warped discs before, and thats a strong vibration too, I know what thats like.
