2000 Ford Explorer V8 5.0L (Check Engine Light)
Hello,
I had a constant Check Engine light immediately after start-up. I took my truck to the good ole folks at Auto Zone for the free egine dianostics reader. It revealed the code, P0401 (EGR Insufficient Flow Detected). The Auto Zone representative advised me to get out and run the truck on the open highway to try and blow out a potential carbon build-up. I did as told and the Check Engine light reappeared within the next 24 hours after the fourth engine start. So with the help of a Haynes Manual, I took off my EGR Valve and inspected/cleaned it out. It was actually very clean and the pindelon and diaphram operated normal with good suction. I then took a wire brush and probed/vaccumed the inside of the manifold housing where the EGR Valve is attached. I broke through on the second probe attempt and I felt my wire brush inside the hollow nonrestrictive area of the manifold (initially clogged with carbon). Then I removed the EGR Pipeline/Tube with the 2 rubber hoses attached and cleaned them out with compressed air. I then replaced the DPFE Sensor. My old sensor ports were clogged with carbon. After reassembly of all parts and components my truck started up on the first try (before, it took a couple tries by tapping the gas pedal). My engine idled with less noise but the Check Engine light was still on. The following day I still had the Check Engine light but my truck was running like a champ! So I took it back to Auto Zone and had them clear the light and I haven't had any reoccurances going on 5 days plus now!
