1998 Windstar A/C problems

Need a little help. Bought a used 1998 Windstar in November 2003 with 75,000 miles. Have already had some fuel system problems as well as having to fix the front strut bearings by adding spacers to stop awful noises. Now the A/C system has decided to freak out. For a while the A/C would change the fan speed and the vent selection on its own. (Go from defrost to front to rear, while blowing hi and low air). A/C has finally quit working all together, very little air comes out when you even turn the selector to Max A/C on Hi speed.

Is this a minor problem with a switch or something or am I looking at major repairs. Any help is appreciated.

My 97 is in the shop as we speak. I kind of had the same problem and mine has been out now for 2-3 years. I had one shop tell me that it wasn't taking a charge and that they wanted 700-800 to pull the dash and replace some valve. Ford called me today and told me that it's a modulator that tells the compressor when to turn on and off. They say 296.00 installed. Not sure if I can do it myself or not. This my be the same with yours. Good luck.

Did a little more investigation last night. Pulled out the control panel and checked the connections and every thing seemed OK. I have the rear air also that is on a different switch. Turned the rear air on HI and got very cold air ad different speeds. This worked on both the front controlls and the rear controls, so I think the core componants are working correctly I think it is just the delivery. When traveling over 35 to 40 mph there is a trickle of cold air that seeps through the front vents, but the fan is still not working. When I have more time need to test the fan and the switch itself, switch illuminates when lights are turned on so it is not completely dead, it is getting power.
