7m-ge Head gasket
How much of a pain would it be to install a new head gasket in my NA Mk3? I dont have the $1500 to do it so i was trying to find a way to do it myself. Should i worry about this job or is it do able?

Re: 7m-ge Head gasket
That would all depend on how mechanically inclined you are, how prepared you are, and how well you know your car...
If you feel confident, its not a Huge job.. You'l never learn if you dont try.. Is your headgasket blown? Your going to have to send your head in to get serviced, machined, magnafluxed, and your deck should be cleaned and thouroughly inspected, and machined if you find any nicks or scratches..

Re: 7m-ge Head gasket
You would definetly know if you blew the HG, I think I told your guy freind the specifics and symptoms in his post, you'd smell the coolant in the exhaust, loss of coolant, low power, lots of white smoke, waterfall in the dash, those kinds of things. If it was just one poof I wouldn't be too concerned but since you know the BHG is starting then what better time to fix it then now. I don't think you'll have to send the head out, just find a good local machine shop and make sure they do quality work, they can do everything you need to get it resurfaced, valves grinded, cleaned, and all that jazz. Just dissasemble and reassemble the head so they won't have to do as much work and let them know it's for a MHG. Expect to pay around $500 for parts and labor though, maybe more, maybe less, depending on where you get the work done and where you buy the parts. Get some ARP head studs and any MHG (HKS, GReddy, lots of different brands out now).

replacing a headgasket is definately do able. I did mine a few months back and it took a good amount of time, because i did a lil bit each day on and off. i did everything by myself, other than having helper carry the head and help scrape off the old gaskets. Only problem i had was looking for connectors and the vacuum hoses. I also misaligned the cps sensor, which was the reason why my car wasn't starting. Just got it running today after my uncle came to help me. Just on parts, i paid about $150 for a stock head gasket because I wasn't sure if the head was in good enuf condition for a metal head gasket. All I can say is replacing a head gasket is possible if u know what u are doing. The reason i feel that shops charge so much is because it is very time consuming, easy but takes a long time.
