I'm not sure how accurate or reliable this is but it provides some explanation:

It's certainly not something that belongs in the "F1" forum, I know that.

The link that a5678 explains it pretty well. It wasn't the same McLaren company that was involved in this car though, but it's an offshoot of the company from the Can-Am days if I'm not mistaken.

The same company was recently involved with Lincoln on this LS performance sedan concept that didn't reach production:

Tuned by McLaren for Lincoln (what was supposed to be the first in a line of cars), it's powered by a 350hp, supercharged 3.9 liter V-8, put through a 6-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels, which are 18-inch, custom design OZ Wheels. The suspension has been extensively tuned, and the car has a 1 inch drop all around. Super-huge brakes are also part of the package. The performance claims seem a bit conservative: Zed-60 in 6.2 and a 14.2 second quarter mile.

McLaren Performance is an engineering firm that provides a variety of services to the automotive OEM and Tier 1 supply base. The company is well known for its engineering analysis capability with respect to engines in particular. They have a test facility in Michigan which has 16 test cells capable of doing endurance and reliability testing, steady state emissions testing, engine build tear down evaluation, Powertrain engineering and design, noise and vibration studies, EPA and CARB certification, warranty failure analysis and catalyst aging and development. The company has also recently acquired a machining operation in Windsor, Ontario for the purpose of supplying machined heads, blocks and modules to OEM customers.

More info about their association with the original Bruce McLaren Motor Racing company can be found here:
