what exactly does it do?

times how fast turbos are, of course!
they allow the engine to continue running at idle so that the engine cools down slower than if you turned the engine off. this achieves a number of things. and because i answered this question some time ago (like 2 years ago) and missed something vital, im sure ill miss something again. but here goes...
the first thing that the timer /cooling thing can do is allow the metal parts in the engine to cool down slower, reducing the internal stress on the parts and increasing fatigue life of the parts in question. the internal stresses occur because nothing cools down at a constant rate. some part of a conrod might have more carbon in it, and that could be enough to make it cool slower...makes everything around it stretch around it = fatigue. the second fuction the timer allows for is letting the oil cool slower. now, im not sure if i remember all of this part, but i think that cooling the oil down fast means that the molecular stress can break the long chain oil molecules into pieces. this means that the oil will get thinner and do its job less effectively. fast cooling can also make it do something else, but i cant for the life of me remember what... basically, it is designed to greatly increase the life of your turbocharged engine. |

That pretty much sums it up. Without a turbo timer, the oil would bake inside the turbocharger, lowering the life of it. A turbotimer lets the engine stay idle for 5 minutes without the key in ignition |

all i can add on to what they said is ether get it or wait in the parking lot for a minute or two and let it idle or kill your engine

the time delay of ignition cut-off is set by the volume of the engine (not the capacity, but the amount of material there is in it). huge engines - truck engines - need to be cooled over a very long time. small pissy 4 cylender engines can be cooled quicker, thus less turbo timer time required.
