No 1st or 2nd gear!

It is an 89 with a V6 and auto tranny. When I hit the gas it feels like the trans is starting out in 3rd gear instead of 1st. My mechanic told me it may have something to do with a computer or something. Any ideas?

Re: No 1st or 2nd gear!

It sounds like the same thing my 92 does. If I manually shift the tranny with the lever it is fine - try thast on yours - when you feel it starting in 3rd just pull the lever to 1st and see if it all of a sudden feels fine, then manually shif to 2nd and finally to 3rd. Somewhere I read about some servo problem there trannys have - some solenoid which controls oil flow or something like that. I think mine is electrical. Some days it is perfect, some days it acts up. Anyone else have any ideas? Oh - when mine acts up the overdrive light blinks but I have not pulled any codes as of yet.

Yep, it was a solenoid problem. Had them replaced and everything is cool now.
