building a 305
now before you tell me to throw it in a lake, bite your tongue cause i really dont care.
ok, i've got a 1990 305 from a camaro sitting in my driveway, and have some ideas rollin around my head as of what to do with it. i dont have a vehicle to put it in as of now, but i'm waiting for that blown camaro to come along for little of nothing. it's got over 150,000 miles on so it's definatly gonna need bored due to the ring lidge, but i was thinkin of strokin it but to what i haven't decided yet, any ideas? i've got 1 pair of 305 heads, and a pair of 350 heads both cast iron. i'd like to keep it 58cc, but i dont want the small valves. is it possible to machine the 350 heads down to stay in the 58cc area? or just get different heads? it's got the roller cam so i'll stay with that set-up and just get a bigger cam. i'll worry about induction later, i just want some ideas about the rotating assymbly. any ideas, right or wrong throw em out there i'm not in a hurry

Re: building a 305
just this past weekend I read an article in Chevy High Performance mag where they made a 305 vortec motor, using vortec 350 heads. Hit their website up, it should be there.

Re: building a 305
What about strokin' it to a 340?
CAST 3.750" stroker crank hypereutectic flat top pistons Ide get clevite bearings and sealed power moly rings Get it all balanced? What kinda power do you wanna make with it?

Re: building a 305
i have a set a 305 high output heads for sale.
1.94 1.50 valves were installed, ported and polished with triple valve springs. have about 5k miles on them since they were totally redone. |

Re: building a 305
steal some parts, and maybe the engine from your cousin's boyfriend's camaro, he probably wont notice, if you exchange the engine...

Re: building a 305
PM 92RS on this, hes the 305 guru, number one guy to talk to in my opinion about these engines. key thing to remember, ESPECIALLY if you stroke it, is that your gonna want to focus on building an engine with a low rpm powerband. the small bore and long stroke will be great for torque, but not hp, and will have awesome port velocities at low rpms, so essentially, youre makin a great truck engine.

Re: building a 305
oh and chamber size, remember the 305 heads have the small 59cc chambers, but somewhere around 20cc dished pistons i think. a set of flat top pistons should allow you to use the 350 heads without modding them, although i have read about fully modded race vortec heads being angle milled from 64 to 54cc's

Re: building a 305
Your 90 heads should have 1.84 intake valves. Bigger valves can be installed but then you can get into intake valve shrouding. Or you can buy the World product heads that are set up for 1.94 intakes. They changed the valve centerline to help with the shouding. Thats the bad thing about small bores. And I built a 334 stroker 305. Ran pretty good. But you have to use the 400 rods and that creates lots of cylinder wall loading.

the 305 heads that i've got are from a much older 305, cant remember what year, but the casting # is 354434. i looked it up once but i cant remember what the year was. the 350 heads the i've got are 1971. both heads dont flow for shit, but the 350 has bigger valves i'm pretty sure

Re: building a 305
The chambers are too big on the 350 heads for a 305. Too much compression loss. Machins shop can install the larger 1.84 intake valves. I just had it done. Infact he had a few sets of the later one with factory 1.84's that he said I could trade for.

Re: building a 305
The center bolt and H.O. heads had the 1.92/1.5 valves, but I would get ahold of a 335 stroker kit from powerhouse engineering www.enginekits.com I swear by it, then for around 700 bones you can get the S/R torquer 305 heads. To top it off I'd go with an edelbrock performer RPM intake, unless you've got emissions and putting it in a "legal" car then you have to use the performer. After that you have the choise of EFI or carb. If your gonna stick a TBI on it, holley 670, carb, a 700 vac secondary, or steal a TPI off of something. You'll be able to push it to around 6400 rpm but your power band will probably cut out around 5800 or so depending on your cam choise witch by the way edelbrock performer rpm is pretty good but has kind of a low lift, but go to compcams.com and check out what they have as far as the extreme energy.

Re: building a 305
ah...ok here i can help you ....--sighs-- ok how much money are you planning on spending? if you want to do it cheap....carb it anything around 600 cfm will be good. , performer manifold, a pair of vortec heads, ported and polished,1.94 / 1.5 or find a set of 416 casting which are lb9 heads ....some will swear they are lg4 but bleh whatever....either or....you are in luck cause...its roller
a USED lt4 hot cam its roller, itll work, and itll be SICK. SLP headers.. i stress slp, bigger, better, mandrel bends....less restriction. now if you have money, build your own TPI system, dont just buy a used junk yard one. get a STEALTH RAM tpi system, build on, youll need an ecm distributor sensors wiring etc.....(i suggest a carb due to simplicity) or if you plan on running a ton of nitrous, super charger or a turbo...L98 heads would work due to the 64 cc chambers and itll drop compression down to like 8.7:1 and thatll be good enough. OR you can stroke it..... OR you could use it as an anchor OR could make a mean coffee table with it OR....the list goes on..... it depends on how much money you want to put into it....
