Window Tinting with GPS/XM Satellite Radio
Just took delivery of my '04 Accord EX 2 DR Coupe w/Navigation system.
In the handbook, it warns against using window tint that contains metallic substances, because that can block or interfere with the GPS and XM radio satellite. It says the antenna is mounted inside above the rear window shelf. I checked with a local window tinter, and he says that he doesn't even use any window tinting film that does NOT have metallic in it, because the non-metallic films are cheap, wear poorly, fade, and do not provide as good heat and light resistance. Here's my question - has anyone tinted their rear window on the EX V6 2DR Coupe with metallic-based window film? If so, did it cause any kind of problem with the GPS or XM radio? |

I have the 2004 accord with XM/GPS. I had my rear window tinted (35% which is a medium shade) and haven't had any problems. The GPS antenna is suppose to be mounted under the rear shelf and gets the signal thru the rear window, it works fine.

I believe that they say as long as the tint doen't have any metallic in it you will be fine.

Re: Window Tinting with GPS/XM Satellite Radio
i sell window tint and i have a 2000 Accord V6 with an Alpine XM tuner and reciver and a sony antenna that is located on the back deck nect to the high mounted brake light and it works fine even under bridges and in my garage or even at the dealerships garage. In other words it never cuts out even when you cover it. It uses the metal plane under the deck as an amplifier for the signal. That is why they tell you to mount it on a flat metal surface wheather it is magnetic or not. if you want to see pics of it ask and i shall send. Oh i also have a 20% Fully metalized tint. It is by SunGard and it is the Endurance 20. Check it out it never fades and also has that cool mirror look when it gets cloudy but when its clear it looks clear with 55.6% heat rejection.

Re: Window Tinting with GPS/XM Satellite Radio
I hear that window tint seldom interferes with onboard electronics. If you really want to be totally safe, and willing to buy top-quality window film, there is ceramic (non-metallic) window film being produced by a company called huper optik window films. There is more information about this manufacturer as well as many others at this http://www.TintCenter.com site.
Good Luck, harrison |
