Umm, replacing the alternator is not the greatest thing. I have a 2001 with the 3.5 and replaced mine this winter just after buying the car used. This is the way I did it: However, I will warn you, it probably isn't standard procedure, so check with a haynes manual or someone else to be sure. My way did work and took about 4 hrs. First disconnect the battery and remove both support bars that mount from the front to the shock towers. Then remove the upper motor mount and bracket from the front. Next remove the battery, battery tray and air box. (I didn't remove the air box, but removing it would make the operation easier) Next, remove the bolts that hold the cooling fans on, and remove the cooling fans. Drain the coolant and remove the coolant and thermostat pipe on the passenger side of the engine. With these things removed, there should be enough room to unbolt the alternator. Take the serpentine belt off the alternator by relasing tension from the tensioner. Remove the main lead and the other wire set from the alternator. Loosen the bolts for the alternator, I can't remember if it slides out, but if loosening them dosen't work, just remove them. Once the alternator is free, you'll have to manuver it up where the battery tray was, it is kind of annoying because there isn't much room. Once it is out, replace it and repeat the procedure in reverse order. Be aware, I am not a mechanic, but I am experienced under the hood of many vechicles, but take no responsibility in any damage to your car. Be sure that your alternator is bad, I remember that mine almost cost $300 and it was a reman and I would recommend AC Delco parts.
