cat-back exhaust

funny story about exhaust, especially since i just asked a question about it last night...

anyway, im on my way to school. i go over the rail road tracks that i always do, really slow cuz its really bumpy. well, i get over, hear a loud bang, and my car gets really loud. so i pull over, look at the exhaust- cuz thats what i knew it was- and said, "fuck this sucks." my fart can had broken away from the rest of the exhaust and was just dangling there. so i drive around to a couple different places and find out who does exhaust. i found a place that'll do it for cheap, but they cant bend the piping, i have to get a kit. what is the cheapest, but best, route for a kid like me lookin to get a cat-back exhaust??they said i can drop it off later tonight, and they would do the work first thing in the mornin. but i want to be able to find a kit thatll suit me best. any suggestions are appreciated, other wise ill just go with the cheapest one they can find. thanks

btw, i went and bought some exhaust tape to keep it quiet for now, i hate that loud semi-truck/diesel sound. and the exhaust fumes were comming up into my trunk area so i had to drive with the windows open and the air cranked just so i wouldnt pass out. my eyes still sting from the fumes too.

i also found another place that'l do the work,(bend the piping and whatnot, no kit needed) but the exhaust guy wasnt in today, and it'll be a week before they can get me in their schedule, so im goin with the more expensive route, but also the fastest.

Re: cat-back exhaust

k, so i got a call back from the shop, they somehow couldnt find a kit for it, and i dont want to go to ebay cuz that would take at least a week to get it. so im goin oem tubing, with some sort of muffler, i think they are goin to put my original muffler on there, but i want to get a newer one that sounds a little better.

heres what i have come up with
muffler 1

muffler 2

muffler 3

muffler 4

this is all i can afford right now, but any other cheap ideas are appreciated, and if you guys could tell me which fart can you like the best, that'd be cool too.

thanks
paul

Re: cat-back exhaust

you know you can't have a cat back exhaust....cause your cat is welded straight on the lower half of your header? Unless you cut it after the cat and weld the new one on. but if you are just looking for a exhaust, you just need to cut it off and weld the new one on. hopefully i didn't confused you

Re: cat-back exhaust

yeah ya kinda did, i got the whole welded onto the header part. but why does that matter, im only goin from the cat back, if i was doin the whole exhaust, i would have to worry bout the headers.

unless what i think a cat-back is is different than what it actually is. i thought it was just new mendrel bent tubing and muffler. unless you cut out the whole tubing from the headers back, and have no cat. im so confused now, i thought i knew at least a little bout cat-backs, but now im doubting that

Re: cat-back exhaust

the cat back exhaust system is the piping after the cat and the muffler. Since you have a SOHC engine, your exhaust system is pretty much one single pipe from the end of the exhaust manifold all the way to the muffler. What I am saying is if you are going to get a catback, you would have to cut the pipe after the cat and weld the new one on. You can't bolt it up like the DOHC exhaust system. However if you get a new header(exhaust manifold and before cat pipe) with bolts, you can get a bolt on cat and then the bolt on cat back. It seems like you are just trying to get a muffler, if so, I am just saying you need to cut off the old muffler and weld on the new muffler. Hope this helps and sorry about the confusion

Re: cat-back exhaust

oh, one other thing i keep neglecting to ask...i was under my car today tryin to tape up my muffler, and i noticed that there was a small cylander up front with little grooves, and then another muffler lookin thing between the first cylander and the actual muffler...i think the cylander with the grooves is my cat, and then there is the other muffler lookin thing still. what in the hell is that, a second muffler?? i cant figure it out cuz there would be no use having it there
